What is the approach for the gambling degenerates?

West Germany and Austria conspired with one another in the 1982 World Cup so both would advance, and knockout Algeria.

Well, third place isn't guaranteed to advance to begin with...

Algeria could easily be eliminated with a loss, Austria too if it were by multiple goals.

But Algeria vs Austria and Jordan vs. Argentina all kick off at the last timeslot of group phase (groups play the final games at the same time to try to limit collusion).
So they will know the scenarios as only their group will be left at that time.

True, but third place with 4 points is surely going to be a top 8 3rd place team.
Korea, Senegal, and Scotland are all locked in as not being able to score 4 points as the third place team in third groups. Surely there is at least 1 more team that will finish third with fewer than 4 points.

Yes, but my post was addressing the lose on purpose part. But as the other guy said since it's the last games maybe by then it's clear that they get in with a loss

So we ended up with a different scenario according to reddit:
if austria wins.
Austria and iran go ahead
If algeria wins
Algeria and iran go ahead
If they draw
Algeria and austria go ahead
if austria wins.
Austria and iran go ahead
If algeria wins

If they draw
Algeria and austria go ahead

They both go through with a draw. Therefore neither has incentive to score.

Austria is clearly trying to win this game. Awesome. No disgrace of Kansas City here so far.

Did DR Congo winning change this scenario from wanting to lose to needing to win?

They both go through with a draw

This was entirely why FIFA made the last group stage games take place at the same time after the disgrace of Gijon, by the way. They wanted to eliminate the teams playing from having a mutual beneficial result.
They messed it up in this instance of the World Cup.

Both teams are definitely going for it. This has been entertaining

Once Mahrez scored, this got a lot worse

Here it comes. Both teams will sit and take no risks.

LOL. ended up being a top 3 game so far

15 minutes of mostly passive soccer and then a shocking all time ending after Mahrez scores a goal.
I am amazed (and shocked) that Mahrez decided to try to score a goal tbh

You have to admit that was a pretty annoying twenty minutes of Algeria completing 200 straight passes.
