I mean no offense to any of the frequent Soccer Board posters when I say this, honestly. But it’s become a little stale for me around here lately. A large part of it has to be due to the fact that our national team failed to qualify for the this summers version of the World Cup. It still bums me out when I think about it. Another issue is that I don’t have a favorite club. I haven’t since I started watching soccer and fell in love with it in the early 2000’s. Most of the threads I see at the top of the page when I do find myself lurking on here are club-based threads. Nothing wrong with that. It’s just not for me. I never made an attempt to “pick” a favorite club. I’m not being holier than thou when I say that, it’s just what it is. I love watching the best soccer players play soccer. My favorite teams to watch vary season to season based on form or just players or coaches I admire. My club is the US Men’s National Team, I guess. That doesn't do me much good right now because of the obvious circumstances. I didn’t even watch the Bosnia match because it simply meant nothing to me and didn’t peak my interest.

Anyway, my question is — Does anyone else have this in common with me? A dude without a club that really just loves watching the game played well?

Nothing wrong with the USMNT being your favorite team. They’re probably mine too slightly over Chelsea (pretty depressing right now). The more you watch the more likely you’ll start following a certain player or something and start an attachment to that club.

I'm sort of the opposite, while I do support and enjoy watching the USMNT... I don't keep up with the ever changing roster moves, young players, etc.. More of, just tune in to the matches... and usually wont bother for a friendly, unless nothing else is going on..

I only really get more dialed in towards WC time..

I’m the opposite. I like watching club level way more than national. I pull for USMNT because they’re from America but don’t really care about the process when they’re not in the World Cup. Even in the World Cup I usually like watching the better teams more than us.

I think in America this is probably more common than not, though not necessarily on places like this.

I just find it kind of ironic that a guy who literally represents our country at home and abroad says club comes before country.

I'm not insanely invested in the national team

been two other poster in here saying the same.

I watch and follow player development but if I miss a match I'm not to upset about it. United on the other hand I make a priority.

but since I'm SCH people will hate on downvote away

But back on topic

usually with countries that don't have a strong domestic league or a league with no real backing like MLS. People tend to rally around their national team bc their local quality of play is subpar.

Also in countries like England, the national team is supported much more by fans of lower league clubs bc its their only chance of going abroad. The atmosphere at an England match is well interesting.

I mean, that's why I like watching the sport. I have a club that I follow (that disappoints me), a national team that I follow (that disappoints me), football teams that I watch that disappoint me (LSU and Saints), which means that when I can watch enjoyable soccer, I do. I enjoy games more where I don't have a vested interest. I'm at that point now, as the constant disappointment would have driven me away from my favorite sports years ago.
