94 WC was it for me

Same, though I was quite a bit older... before that, I never gave soccer much thought... considered it more of a PE sport.. Though, I'm sure I was aware of Pele, etc...

'94 WC... Romario and Bebeto did it for me!

Though it wasn't till the next WC that I started to dive in more and pay attention to club football... Ronaldo I was in Belize that summer and watched it with all those dudes... they loved Brazil.. '98 Owen... Who does he play for?

I have no ties to Italy or the Italian national team, but Fabio Grosso scoring across goal late against Germany in the 2006 WC SF is my first meaningful soccer experience. I've since watched the Italian call of it and it's one of my favorite sports memories for some reason.

"Pirlo Pirlo, a gol, Pirlo a Grosso! GOAL! GOOOOOAL! GOOOOOOAL! GROSSO! GROSSO!! GOAL DI GROSSO! GOAL DI GROSSO! GOAL DI GROSSO!"

I remember watching the 1990 world cup final as a 10 yr. old on tbs or something. While I was fascinated with the idea of a World Cup, and having played plenty of "Goal" on Nintendo, the final was a 1-0 snoozer. Decided on a questionable late penalty given to, and converted by Germany.

And then the most magical summer of my life happened 4 years later. I spent the summers in Orlando every year with my mom's family and had gone to a USMNT game vs Australia in 92'. I had started following the national team religiously on their worldwide barnstorming tour, and US cup matches each summer as well. Miraculously, the 94 world cup was hosted by the good ole USA and I was blessed to be able to attend every match hosted in Orlando that summer and have been hooked ever since. Just seeing all the different countries and the passion of it all was intoxicating. As far as the US, Eric Wynalda hitting a perfect free kick upper 90 vs Switzerland. Defeating Colombia in the Rose bowl, which included the greatest miss of all time from a Balboa bike. The US advancing to the knockout round to draw Brazil on the 4th of July was almost too perfect. Unfortunately, Leonardo caught Tab Ramos with a vicious elbow, and already without Harkes accumulating a 2nd bullshite yellow vs Romania in group play, we never could do much against the mighty Brazilians. Still, an incredible run, and the beginning of a lifelong passionate fandom. 2nd only to LSU Fighting Tiger football.

I played since I was 5 years old and had 2 older brothers that played and watched soccer. I honestly don't remember life when I didn't watch. I'm actually kinda jealous that you have that one memory that made you fall in love with the game.

86 World Cup. I remember games would just appear like magic on ESPN in the afternoon. No pregame. No lead-in. Just the logo and then the game started. Not sure if they were tape delayed or not. It was so foreign. Hand of God game.

Those were live. Then they'd replay at least one match late-night. Watched a lot of that on Univision and listened to MOST of it on KGLA 1540 a.m. in New Orleans.
