But I guess a price is a fare so... partial credit.

Buffon was 33mil pounds....De Gea won't come close to that remotely especially since we can get him on a free in a year....I mean come on...If you had him on a 5 year deal I'd still hate to pay that for him.

Right and no one has come remotely close in 14 yrs. I'm curious as to why it is so close now....I mean De Gea is good....does anyone see him as being the best GK of all time...I'd have to bet against that at this point.
I guess its all about how much he is worth on the market....right now the market is saying he is worth 21.2 mil (based on the fact that no better offers are coming)....if the seller doesn't like that price that's absolutely OK and like I said I'm sure Madrid will take him for 0 next year.

Transfer fees across the board have gone up big time in 14 years. 30 million for a player then, is probably double that now.

hasn't been the same since summer 2003 when the fees started to really skyrocket

It is what it is. The market determines the value of the player.
Also, comparing De Gea today to Buffon when he brought in 50 mil Euro is insanity.
I've said all along (minus the delirium of the week when Ramos said he was staying and De Gea's GF mouthed off) that Madrid would get De Gea on a free after the season....I still believe that to be the case.....because I think LvG wants to prove a point like you said. Now whether that is smart or not could be debated.

It's about more than just proving a point though. We want stability at GK, just like RM does. We would prefer to bring in someone to replace De Gea who will be our long-term first choice. There aren't clear options out there at the moment. So, why should we sell for less than he's worth? Keeping DDG will give us another year to line up a replacement. DDG may prefer to go to RM, but he still has affection for United. He is a professional and would act like one until he can leave next summer. He has a lot of reasons to retain his focus and play well. We kept Ronaldo for a year longer than he wanted to stay. He had an exceptional season, and then he got his move.
We won't allow RM to hold us hostage on a low-ball valuation just because DDG may want to go. It doesn't make sense for us on a whole lot of levels - unless the price is right.

Right....still different cause he still went for just a little more than free after his year.

This goes both way to the market and the seller.

I made the Ronaldo comparison to show that DDG could stay and have a good season for us, even if he may want a move now. Not sure how Ronaldo being sold as opposed to leaving on a free affects the comparison at all.

I feel sorry for Halilovic if he really does get loaned to Hamburg.
