So there are 9 groups, top 9 obviously go through, and then there are 4 more teams who qualify. So which Countries make up the 4 matches to decide those final 4 qualifying spots? How can you have eight of the nine 2nd place teams of each group but leave out one? Is that one left out the lowest point total of the 9 groups, or the lowest power ranking like you said?

Rooney with a headed goal to put England ahead, and possibly avoiding an extremely tough slate of playoff matchups.

What happens is you take the 9 runners-up, then wipe out their results against the sixth-placed team. Except, of course, for the final group which only has 5 teams.

Then those standings are put against each other based on points, goal difference, and goals scored.

The 9th-placed out of these is left out. Looking more and more like it could be Denmark being axed.

8 of the 9 second place teams play a home-away playoff. The 8 best are determined by points and GD from their games against the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th placed teams in their group (eliminating results against the worst teams in their group for groups with 6 teams).

Yeah wha Brave said. Basically it is like the 2 games against the worst team in their groups never happened leaving everyone with 8 games to count for their points and GD

Thanks y'all. There are going to be some solid teams in the playoffs. Portugal, France, Croatia, Sweden, Ukraine/England, Turkey possibly.

Yeah I would definitely want to avoid that

Qualified: Belgium, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia, Bosnia, England/Ukraine, Spain/France

Playoffs: Croatia, Sweden, (Romania), (Iceland), Portugal, Greece, England/Ukraine, Spain/France

Right now, based on the numbers, Denmark would be the odd man out as their current game with Malta is virtually meaningless.

How epic would it be if we are grouped with Iceland in the World Cup and Bacon plays in that game.

That would be awesome. They have held on for a 1-1 draw with Norway, so their place (likely unseeded) in the playoffs is confirmed.

Do they just seed the top 4 in the playoffs and draw from there?

Yes, they will use the October world rankings to seed the top 4 teams and go from there.

So come Thursday, the October 17th Fifa rankings reveal, we will know which of those world powers will avoid one another. Also, where did USA need to fall in those rankings to be a seeded, pot team for the WC? Was it top 10th or better?

Top 8 if Brazil is in top 8. Top 7 if Brazil is NOT in Top 8.

And I'm pretty sure it's the November rankings, not October they are using for the final draw.

It seems unlikely we will jump 5 spots to get seeded then, since all the teams ahead of us have done nothing to really weaken their position.
