‘You have this superpower’ — how the left is weaponizing jury nullification

Most of this will come as no surprise but there are some interesting details.

“You have this superpower.”
That statement from Qiana Johnson is part of reported training material for residents to engage in “jury nullification,” whereby jurors ignore the law and incriminating facts in a given case to nullify any prosecution.
Notably, Johnson is the newly elected clerk of Prince George’s County Circuit Court in the Maryland suburbs of Washington. She is part of a growing left-wing movement gaining traction with voters that calls for radical changes to the U.S. legal system.
The effort is to engineer “Twelve Angry Men” scenarios on real juries — but unlike in the movie, the jurors are actually being trained to ignore evidence and deliberations in favor of political outcomes.
In her election campaign for her current job, Johnson had to overcome questions about her own criminal record. But many voters are willing to give others a second chance when they show evidence of rehabilitation and contrition. The more immediate concern might be embracing a practice that is expressly barred by courts.
Johnson is part of a new investigation by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee into groups training citizens to engage in jury nullification — including Free DC and Harriet’s Wildest Dreams, where Johnson was reportedly a board member.
One such document allegedly declares, “You have this superpower, and that superpower is you are able to nullify that goddamn jury.”
Far-left professors have long advocated that juries use jury nullification. Georgetown Law professor and MSNBC legal analyst Paul Butler has long advocated that Black jurors engage in nullification in cases involving Black defendants. Butler wrote in the Washington Post in 2016: “Confronting the racial crisis in criminal justice, jury nullification gives jurors a special power to send the message that Black lives matter.”

I’m as right as they come in the traditional sense, and I’m a huge proponent of jury nullification.

Happens locally too. I testified in a murder trial. The guy was caught killing another guy in broad daylight and on 3 separate video cameras.
Because someone on the jury shared certain characteristics with the killer, she said, per another juror, “I don’t care what evidence there is, I’m not voting him guilty”. And she didn’t

Sounds like OJ Simpson all over again.

This is how you get lynch mobs and vigilante justice.

I'm honestly surprised that the schools and colleges haven't added this to their indoctrination.
Or, maybe they already have, and it just hasn't come to light yet.

Sometimes, the old ways are just better.

The far left hates the rule of law. Except when they can hide behind it, or use it against others.

I as well. But I also believe in ending the lineage of a perp entirely if a perp harms my family or I.
So yes, jury nullification can be a wonderful tool for justice.

This superpower cuts both ways.

It's hard to see the point of juries without it.

Through ignoring evidence and making decisions on a political agenda?

Fine.
It will just accelerate the rise of vigilantism.

It will also accelerate the rise of anarchy, and that is exactly what they want

The left wants to be able to murder you and get away with it and this is one of their key strategies to make that happen.

If they understand that if they can get this to become a real thing, that many many others around the nation - of all sorts of political persuasions - will be doing the same thing in their local and regional courts, then I guess they can give it a shot. But they may not be too happy with that brave new world they've instigated. Not everybody thinks like they do, or will ever be made to so.
I wonder what strain this would put on the Supreme Court to have so many diametrically opposed rulings flooding onto their dockets.

It's a tool that's too important to give up. It can be abused just like any other tool, and that's bad, but we have to look at the benefits it provides as well.

There are times when "legal" is not fair or just. We've all seen cases posted here where a defendant was charged for violating a law, but common sense and true justice would demand an acquittal.
