He was so popular that the number of Republicans elected into Congress and as Governors was nothing short of astounding during his tenure.

Whatever a paper writes glorifying an individual doesn't necessarily mean that individual is popular among the People. I didn't mean to say that he wasn't glorified by the media, just that his popularity didn't seem much higher than your average president (albeit, higher than Trump's).

I don't think his approval rating ever got over 60%, did it? I know he only got around 51% of the popular vote in his second election, and only about 60,000 more votes than Hillary got in 2016, and she didn't even win.

His approval rating according to 2016 election day exit polls was around 52% IIRC
I still think his approval ratings shot up in 2016 mainly because trump and Clinton made him look good by comparison
For most of his presidency (2010-2015) his rating was mediocre and sometimes dipped pretty low
