my 20 year old son has a friend, the mom is a 2x cancer survivor

over the last several months, she was unable to get the proper care & treatment

she died suddenly early this week

YES, she was able to see docs in the last few weeks, but she had deteriorated...

thanks China

and oh yeah, next time someone asks me WHO WILL YOU SACRIFICE AND HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU WANT TO SEE DIE JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE SELFISH AND WANT A HAIRCUT & YOUR 'RIGHS"!

I will share THIS story with them

Just to be clear, you are saying she couldn't receive her standard care because she couldn't access her doctors and/or other medical services due to the COVID shutdown?

I don’t believe you. People only die from Corona. If not for Corona we’d live forever.

Because hospitals and cancer treatment centers overreacted and shut services down to all things not named COVID. My heart goes out to the family, but you can't blame citizens for resisting having their livelihood taken away. They didn't shut the places down.

I think I'm being misunderstood in the OP

This is just not true. We’ve already had a thread about this and multiple poster with cancer reported that they continued to receive their treatments. It’s absurd to think that they would stop necessary cancer treatments anyways.

Yeah, sorry, his response had nothing to do with your situation. Treatment vs diagnostics, many services ground to a halt. Sorry for your loss.

I have a friend who has had his cancer protocol delayed over eight weeks because of COVID.

“hospitals and cancer treatment centers overreacted and shut services down,” is absolutely true. Of course individuals mid-radiation or mid-chemo were largely able to continue said treatments. That is just one part of the cancer workup and treatment process. Follow up visits were cancelled or rescheduled. Diagnostic imaging and biopsies were cancelled. New patient visits were pushed out months longer than they otherwise would have been. One hospital system in WA had a 60% decrease in cancer diagnoses in April and May, compared to historical averages.

You’ll latch on to the word “all” in the post you replied to, because buckeye_vol has never been wrong here. But anyone with half a brain understood that the OP was referring to a significant decrease in access to workup and treatment of non-covid pathology. Which 100% happened, even in cancer patients.

I did not mean to allege that

what happened is, she was a survivor and had stopped treatments, for how long, I have no idea

during the shutdowns and fear porn, she had issues and either did not or could not go in to get the treatment she needed

I know. I was responding to the poster who did.

got it.

So, you are blaming the misplaced hysteria. You are blaming people like buckeye_vol who just kept pushing this narrative that this was much worse than it actually was.

I’m not doubting anyone, you just giving my experience - my mom has battled breast cancer for 20+ years on and off.

We were in process of trying to get her into MD Anderson just to get their opinion right before everything went crazy. She decided on a treatment her doctor suggested so she’s now on her 3rd round (on two weeks, off one). This chemo is pill form so she doesn’t have to go for infusions. She’s had a few appts for blood work, talk to doc, etc- they meet you outside and take your temp and ask the questions, patients go inside by themselves unless they have to have help. Mom is 80 and has had 2 hips and one knee done and this med has caused some more joint pain but she still can get around well enough to get inside to a chair etc. so she’s been going in by herself. I hate that part because she’s used to one of us going with her and if you’ve ever been to one of those offices you know how depressing they are but overall I guess we’ve been kind of lucky.

Anyway, just our story.
