Whatever happened to that deal?

Trump tore that deal up (JCPOA) back in May 2018

CLAIM: Recent media reporting claims that the U.S. Navy has restarted escorting or assisting commercial vessels during transits through the Strait of Hormuz. FALSE.

TRUTH: Project Freedom has not resumed, and U.S. forces are not currently escorting commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Can the US stop Iran from shutting down the SOH?" is the relevant question, and the answer so far is "No".

The U.S. absolutely has the capability to stop Iran from shutting down the SOH. Probably not an easy task, but we certainly have the military capabilities to do it.

How much commercial traffic is getting through now compared to January 2026?
To be accurate, the main factor at play is insurance, not actual blockade. We will have to see how negotiations pan out. But it seems possible that if this continues much longer, nations will need to take over the realm of maritime insurance through the strait. That would accomplish two goals. (1) Provision of insurance, (2) pressure on private insurance to adjust rates for passage.
