Would you feel safe visiting London, Paris, Rome or any other major city if about 60 people were shot there every weekend? Seems like something radical needs to be done in Chicago. I wonder how their numbers compare with Baghdad or Cairo?

Not really, but the Chicago violence is so self-contained its kind of crazy.
I've never felt even remotely unsafe in Chicago, but I also don't ever go anywhere near any of those neighborhoods.

Chicago is the shining example of urban liberalism in this country

If I knew they weren't shooting right at the Eiffel Tower, like I know they aren't shooting at Wrigley Field and on Madison.
I visit New Orleans frequently, I just know better to stray into the shitty areas. French Quarter is worse than nearly any tourist place in Chicago, but yet, there I am........

far more people are shot in America than Europe

I flew into Chicago for an interview in September and took a long walk. I had no idea where I was or walking, but I never heard a gunshot, and returned safely to my Hotel after eating dinner.
I will admit I was on high alert during my walk....

It is pretty amazing. Tons of the gangs are killing eachother. The people in the city really aren't too fearful. Once that drifts into the nice 'hoods though, watch out.

Nope. Chicago is a shining example of the slow and steady decline of black inner city neighborhoods into self contained third world countries. You shouldn't confuse liberalism with government dependence.
If you wan't a shining example of urban liberalism check out most cities in the annual best cities to live or best cities to raise a family. You'll find most of those cities are liberal in the truer sense of the word.

I've been to all three of those cities recently. Paris just a few weeks ago and London just a few days ago. Rome was over a year ago. Paris was sketchy in a few areas. London has no-go areas. The major areas to stay away from that seem sketchy are the area that the refugees have been resettled in. The only problems I have with these cities is the refugees hounding you to buys the cheap crappy souvenir's. As long as I was warned where not to go, I would feel OK in Chicago....

That's a good point. Seattle and Portland are both super liberal places that are great to live in, but location does help them out quite a bit too.

New Orleans is much more violent per capita than Chicago. Ditto Baton Rouge. And St. Louis, Cleveland, Memphis, Milwaukee, and lots of other American cities.

Quit being a vagina.
I feel safe in Nola and the crime is pretty scattered.
I sure as hell could figure out how to stay safe in Chicago as could anyone with half of a brain.

Yeah, NOLA is far more dangerous unfortunately. The crime and violence spreads out and is not as self-contained.
Chicago it pretty much all literally happens in very select shithole neighborhoods.

That's a lot of brain to ask of some of our fellow Americans

Stay out of south Chicago and it's a great city. Unlike NOLA where the bad areas are marbled throughout the city.
European cities are bad for pick pockets but the chances of getting shot are slim.

The far Southside and the near Westside is where the great majority of the violence happens. The near Southside (South Loop, the area near Soldier Field, Chinatown, Bridgeport, basically all the neighborhoods down Lakeshore to Kenwood and Hyde Park) range from decent to very upscale. You have to get about five miles south of downtown to get into some real trouble and the worst of it is about ten miles south of downtown, and even then, there are some great areas in the far Southside as well (Beverly, Mount Greenwood, Morgan Park).
The near Westside is what has gotten so very bad in the last few years. Austin, Garfield Park, Lawndale, and West Humboldt Park - an incredible amount of violence concentrated into a pretty small area.

Oh my wife told me last week after the Berlin terrorist attack, that she would feel safer taking our kid to Argentina or Chile or certain parts of Peru for a family vacation before we went to Europe. That might be a little hyperbole, but its certainly the way things are trending.
