I have always remembered the parable my dad shared with me when I started dating. He was engaged to a woman that he had dated since high school and had just gotten back from his 2nd of 3 tours in Vietnam. He was a mud marine and a proud hillbilly, so when the group decided to get marine tattoos he was game. Ole girl he was engaged to went on a rant about his going back again to Vietnam and their plans etc, but then she screwed up. She said “if you love me you will not get a tattoo”. Dad said he dropped it immediately and made plans to go fishing. He came home with the tattoo. Didn’t say a word, just packed ole girls random crap up and gave to her parents. He shipped out a month later for the 3rd and last tour. A year after he got back he was dating my mom and they are at 50 years happily married. Dad had made up his mind to not get that tattoo until ole girl said “if you love me...”.
