frick GW and his political purism
Oh this is rich.
The political establishment has been lambasted by Trump supporters as being weak and compromising their values.
Now that Trump is actually taking over, the political purism talk goes out the window.

That said, what Trump is doing is neither prudent nor conservative (I repeat myself) in the long term BUT I am OK with it for now. Getting some short term wins to inspire confidence and show workers that you care about them and businesses that you want to work with them is a great move and I applaud it.
I just love the irony. I can point out how amateur/purists were wrong and get economic wins at the same time. It's like having my cake and eating it too!

Do you really care how the bank loans out your money while it's sitting there? No, you don't, just as long as you get that money plus a little interest back. That's all this Carrier deal is.

At what point did Trump ever run as a consevative?
Why the hell would he govern like one?
Conservatism was handily defeated way back in the primaires.

Serious question… what coercion was involved with the carrier deal?
I saw the tax incentives… but did not see a penalty. Unless I missed some details, this is exactly how things should be done.
That looks like small government making a better business environment to me, and I amd ENTIRELY against any tariffs and penalties for companies leaving. Nobody can accuse me of being a trump fan, and I think this was just a good job.
Will is entirely correct on the principle of keeping government from strongarming business… but I don't think this was a case of that. He can shove his walker up his own arse... tennis balls and all.
Oh, and just so I don't miss out on the DVs, frick all you previous supporters of small government and freedom that now want protectionism and an iron fist to force people to behave the way you want. Hypocritical sellouts.

It's not political purism with George Will. It's a severe case of butt hurt. He was one who swore every day on TV that Trump could not win. Charles Krauthammer has eaten his serving of crow and admitted "I was wrong." No such humility with G. Will.

Yippee?
Putting aside what Trump may have said, there were PLENTY of people on this board pushing Trump as a TRUE CONSERVATIVE.
The thinking has morphed as such:
1. Screw these Republicans in Congress for compromising with Obama (even though they didn't have the 2/3 vote to get past his veto).
2. We need a Freedom Caucus that will stick to their conservative principles!
3. The Establishment is afraid of the Freedom Caucus because they threaten their insider lobbyist lifestyle.
4. Trump is going to take on the establishment insiders! Down with Wall Street insiders like Jeb and Clinton. Down with Globalists who want to ship our jobs overseas or let immigrants come here and take them!
5. (Post election) Trump is all about the art of the deal and compromise! Sure he said he would drain the swamp, but he needs some people with experience. And yeah he is going to have to compromise on immigration, repealing obamacare and (insert issue) but that's just him being a good negotiator!
If people can't see that #1 and #5 are in conflict then I don't know what to tell them.

Pretty sure Carrier is investing $16m now to upgrade the plant, etc...

So, this is the new conservatism’s recipe for restored greatness: Political coercion shall supplant economic calculation in shaping decisions by companies in what is called, with diminishing accuracy, the private sector.

Never before were so many people upset that people's jobs were saved. Democrats now care about free trade. Republicans now care about offering incentives to keep business in a state. What the frick world are we living in? One where we are MAGA and good things have to be evil because populism will destroy both parties.

Probably to make it more automated. 700K on incentives only goes so far.

No one should be surprised. Trump's a blue dog democrat who is most closely aligned ideologically with midwest and northeast labor unions. He loves big pensions because he sells condo's in Florida and owns golf courses. It's important for these workers to be able to retire young so that they are still alive to play golf in Florida. To hell with the fact that the rest of us subsidize these ridiculous pensions in the form of higher prices for goods.

He's not wrog. If a business needs government to prop it up through tax concessions and subsidies in order to remain in business, then that business should not exist. That's just welfare for corporations.
We need to reduce the tax and regulstory burden for ALL businesses, rather than enabling the government to pick and choose winners and losers by allowing some companies to pay less taxes and meet lower regulatory burdens and others to have to pay the full sticker price. Once government goes down that road, it just means that all new businesses have to bribe government officials just to be able to move into any new market. That is bad bad bad precedent.

The problem is we don't realize the issue here. Carrier isn't going out of business. They are moving their jobs to another locale. If Indiana didn't act now, they would have lost the jobs and investment. Indiana couldn't afford to wait for the new Congress to maybe get around to making the climate better for Carrier.
Conservatives used to recognize the importance of States competing for businesses. It created the best business climates. Now that Trump is president, things that have happened for years are now BIG GUBMINT picking winners and losers. SOLYNDRA! This shite isn't anything like Solyndra. It was beating back Mexico using purchasing power.
