The issue here is not as simple as, there will be a bunch of lazy people who would rather collect unemployment instead of working. Entire industries are shut down and the industries that are not shut down sill feel the effects of the shut downs. My lawn guy called me today to say that they will continue to take care of the lawns because home maintenance is considered essential. He was probably calling to find out if people are going to be able to pay for his services.

And they probably will because government is a shitshow

Im guessing the UE office in my state right now is just hitting accept and pay on as many applications that come across their desk in a day they possibly can.

Paperwork will be "lost". Verifications never done.

Won't be any clawing back of any unearned benefits.

Yeah you definitely shouldn't be making more on unemployment but I don't have a problem with it being close to your old salary for a few months.

Yep.
And I'd imagine that if your job opens up in 2 months or 1 month or whatever... and you don't go back, then you've voluntarily quit and are no longer eligible.

I'm also pretty sure that rates, as well as wage max, for the employers will go way up in 2021.

That's a VERY easy check. All they do is punch in your SSN and your quarters worked pops up. Immediately. Hell, in half the states, the employers can check THAT information.

I'd imagine at the very least they'd to that.

But they also said that many new groups of workers would be eligible, such as some 1099 workers and self employed business owners that wouldn't normally be eligible. So... I dunno. It's gonna be a mess.

You are exactly right.

I had two employees draw unemployment for 18 months after Katrina and they never missed a pay check due to the storm. I reported them every quarter and would have fired them if I could have replace them. The state did nothing.

Well, for many recipients it will not provide incentive to return to work until used up

It will indeed be used up, and work will again be necessary to live. One has to think there will be more people than many here would believe that will understand that a glut of unemployed suddenly all looking for work at once may be a bad ole deal for them and their employment options. That type of thought process will lead folks to be looking for preferable jobs earlier in the process.

There are more than a few people out there that will be happy to forego employment for a few months of paid vacation. I know one employer that has had two employees ask to be laid off already.

No doubt. Don't disagree. However there will also be more than a few that understand that falling into bad graces with a current employer, and/or waiting until everyone else is looking for a new job will have negative consequences.

And they'll be bitching next March about not making enough money at their new job to help pay their taxes from their free four month money supply.

This. I think that IB thinks that everyone will be out there going "Yippee.... free money for four month" and that employers will be unable to stop them or do anything about it if they want to go that rout. Perhaps he's that type of employer, but most aren't.

So I should turn down that $600 & try & live on La.'s max of $247 a week? Which is the second lowest in the country. And La.is one of only 4 states that if a person is receiving SS benefits, the State will take a percentage cutoff, to the extent most will receive 0 unemployment benefits. This is not a perfect world but I will not lose sleep over this $600 weekly benefit that will help some get through this.

Yeah there's a significant lack of credit given to these wage earners. They not all ne'er-do-wells.

Nobody said that. The 600 is on top of the 247.

Found that out this Monday, the average SS benefit payment will zero out any State weekly benefits. And there are many "old timers"who stay in the workforce post retirement, certainly not at their former wages. And that $600 runs out in 4 mths.and it would be back to $247 a week for those unable to find a job. With a probable recession, there are no guarantees of work for anyone.

It’s a stimulus bill... they just want money going to businesses while the recipient gets something in return.... they don’t care that some are getting more or less, just spend.

So... if you draw SS and still work... and get laid off, then the state will reduce whatever Unemployment benefits they might be eligible to receive by the amount of their SS draw?

I assume that the state takes this into account on unemployment reports and the employers don't have to play unemployment taxes on the wages of employees who also draw SS. Right?
