Japan didnt defeat the virus because of masks
Japan is completely homogeneous, listen to authority (and give up privacy and rights), and has strict borders
The US is also 26X as big
masks are a virtual signal that is meaningless in the grand scheme

I found this recent article that appears to address many of the questions in this thread.
Still Confused About Masks? Here’s the Science Behind How Face Masks Prevent Coronavirus
quote:
A recent study published in Health Affairs, for example, compared the COVID-19 growth rate before and after mask mandates in 15 states and the District of Columbia. It found that mask mandates led to a slowdown in daily COVID-19 growth rate, which became more apparent over time. The first five days after a mandate, the daily growth rate slowed by 0.9 percentage-points compared to the five days prior to the mandate; at three weeks, the daily growth rate had slowed by 2 percentage-points.
Another study looked at coronavirus deaths across 198 countries and found that those with cultural norms or government policies favoring mask-wearing had lower death rates.
Two compelling case reports also suggest that masks can prevent transmission in high-risk scenarios, said Chin-Hong and Rutherford. In one case, a man flew from China to Toronto and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. He had a dry cough and wore a mask on the flight, and all 25 people closest to him on the flight tested negative for COVID-19. In another case, in late May, two hair stylists in Missouri had close contact with 140 clients while sick with COVID-19. Everyone wore a mask and none of the clients tested positive.

I can imagine how my life could have ended up very differently based on the timing of things and am fortunate to not be very much affected. My heart goes out to anyone not so fortunate.

At this point, it doesn’t fricking matter. Everything is getting cancelled, the election will result in civil war. Instead of worrying about what people will think about you, you should be buying guns and ammo.
See you in the other side brother

You and I have very different definitions for "science."

Yeah, that’s not what folks on here are looking for. You’re talking valid science and shite.

I don’t mind wearing a mask to put others at ease.
But I hate wearing while I work because I have a very physical job and I need to breathe well.
My main contention isn’t really about masks. It’s about a mayor or governor unilaterally telling the people they have to do something with no approval from the voters or legislature. That’s a very slippery slope.

Government mandated face coverings are unconstitutional.

There was nothing valid or scientific about what he posted.
Seriously, if masks were a difference-maker, why is it so hard to produce a credible study that proves it?

Because when I do, "I can't breathe".

There are plenty if you search, but nothing will change minds because this has become about politics, not about health.

Seems simple enough... until you realize this could go on for the next 24 months.
Ok by you?

It’s not containable, it’s far more virulent and far less deadly than current testing has shown.
Masks slow the spread to all people. Healthy people - 85% or so - would be better off exposed and immune. The other 15% should self protect; they’ll be better off in the long run if the 85% move on

Not sure...I just ask why did China have to create the damn virus so small that even N95 masks can’t completely filter out the virus? And the fishing scarfs to block the sun people are wearing to prevent Covid spread, God lord, man if only those actually blocked any type of virus that would make life so much easier. It’s a damn shame but hey, at least you have a mask!

I wear one indoors just to do it. Really doesn't effect me. I really could care less at this point. I'm just tired of the shite.
