quote:

Anarchy awaits the conservative who follows his ideals too far. This might sound surprising, considering that the classical anarchist is an enemy of all institutions—the state, of course, but also property (which he calls theft), marriage, religion. The conservative characteristically aspires to save such things. Yet there is a path that leads from conservatism to anarchism narrowly defined. It begins with federalism, cherished by nearly all American conservatives. It follows the thread of federalism further, however, to the point of Anti-Federalism—a preference for something like the loose Articles of Confederation over the more centralizing U.S. Constitution. From there it’s a short leap from radical localism to secessionism. Small is beautiful, isn’t it? Then a micro-state is lovelier than even the humblest federation.

No. Property exists within anarchy. If you take my stuff I kill you. People learn this and stop taking each other's stuff. Social interaction rules developed way before govt came into existence.

I'm an anarchist sympathizer.

But I know that, like Communism, it won't work.

Anarchy is a power vacuum, and that vacuum will always get filled.

Historically, and strangely, anarchists have been allied with and then tossed aside by communists.

It’s called anarcho-communism, and their lifespan is about as long as it takes for actual communists to show up.

Here is a good way to look at anarchy. Ask yourself "Do we really need govt to do that?"
When I was a kid we all knew that govt was necessary to deliver the mail. Today, we realize we don't need them.
Do we really need govt for defense? Mercenary armies have existed.

We'll never have anarchy but we can test the limits of going without govt. In 1776 our govt had a tiny fraction of the power that it has now. If we had a a time machine and immediately reverted to 1776 limits of govt some would describe it as anarchy.

Exactly...or they create a government to stop people from taking other peoples stuff.

govt came into existence.

Mercenary armies can be bought out. Armies loyal to a country are far less likely to be.

Something worse than what we have now would immediately fill the power vacuum. Anyone seriously advocating anarchy is a moron with no foresight.

Yes

Who do you think paid the mercenaries?

There will never be “less government”. It only expands.

And they would be wrong.

It expands and then it collapses. Britain was up to its eyes in debt after the war.

Actually, they create a government to take other people's stuff and give it to other people who voted for the govt. Of course, the govt keeps the largest share of the theft.

No.

The people who wanted to be defended.

Yes, but in logic this is called 'should/would' fallacy.
IE...'Women should not be allowed to vote.'
A rebuttal of 'that won't happen' is irrelevant. Do you understand?

They would be right.

George Washington and co. also smashed Western Pennsylvanians who didn't want to pay tax on whiskey.

Silly conservatives, you just threw off your body's PH and died! Lucky I was here to save you from yourself.

God these ****s are insufferable!

You mean governments. Because private citizens have not commanded mercenary armies in any relevant context for an incredibly long time, and they cannot afford it now.

No they wouldn’t. The US in 1776 factually was not governed under any type of anarchist principles. Federalism is not anarchy. How stupid modern pseudo-intellectuals feel about the past is not relevant. It wasn’t anarchy, period.
