Louisiana can easily have 5 very red districts, and one purple district. There were proposed maps that did exactly that. It was SB116 i think--and there are others. There is no need to pack in Louisiana--they are choosing to create a black, blue district.

This. They are just lazy and don’t want to have to deal with minorities in a slightly purple district. I think there is a lot to protecting Scalise’s seat as well.

They don’t want to have to work for those votes.

The latter is preferable to me. If I can’t feel the sides, what’s the use?

What do I not understand about this process? I don't understand why they can't just say "ok Louisiana, you get x number of congressmen/women. Now go vote". The concept of districts has always baffled me. We don't elect senators based on districts and we seem to be doing just fine with that. I know we need proper representation and all that stuff, so I guess districts allow for small, "forgotten" areas to have representation. Maybe that's it, I don't fricking know lol.

The entire purpose of the House is to represent the people. Districts/constituencies exist so that each group of people has an elected representative that, in theory, lives amongst them and is familiar wiht the issues of that area.

The Senate exists(ed) to represent the States themselves, hence the legislative election and now statewide election.

If we had proportional representation like you are saying, every single member of Congress from Louisiana would be chosen from Baton Rouge and New Orleans law firms.

Its only illegal if they say its because of race. As long as they say its based on party, and no one puts race into the record as a reason, its legal.

It’s pretty obvious it’s about race though. Almost more racist this way. They are basically telling the blacks in that district to shut up and like this or you get nothing. But we all know the legislature doesn’t have the balls to go 6-0.

Negative. 5 safe seats and one purple seat in Orleans, St. Tammany, St. Bernard, Plaq., and lower jefferson. I made this one in ten minutes: The "blue" district is 49% D to 47.7% R. All the remainders are safe red, with the "purple" district having the lowest GOP percentage at 58% R to 39% D.

And the added benefit to this map is that there are plenty of conservative attorneys on the Northshore who would love to tackle the election fraud in Nola that would inevitably get cranked up in an attempt to put a democrat in office.

Option 2 - legislature draws a map that could result in a 6-0 sweep, but it would come at the expense of turning at least 2 districts somewhat purple. So its possible you could get a 6-0 result, but its also possible that Democrats could win more than just 1 seat.

That’s bullshite for multiple reasons addressed already. We could very easily be 6 districts with republicans in office or at worst still be 5-1

Unfortunately they haven’t represented the state since the 17th amendment made them popular vote.

Agreed. I'm down for repealing the 17th... and others.

but there’s no way to do this without putting at least one, maybe two seats at risk.

So just give the black caucus a layup to get a seat??

This is weak men creating hard times.

In no way would the BR metro area be risky. Imagine EBR, Ascension, and Livingston Parish combined going blue. Will not happen.

A stronger move would have been to create 5 safe seats and then 1 centered on NOLA that is purple and is up in the air. Worst case scenario you are 5-1 but with less gerrrymandered districts. You still could go 6-0 on red waves though which you can't do with the currently proposed map.

If you elected Congressmen at large, all five would be from the BR-NOLA corridor and at least one, more likely two, occasionally three would be Democrats.
