Why does this Navy ship look like this?

Any Sailors have any input to whats going on here? The Navy shared this on their Facebook page. The deck looks dirty and rusty, is that normal?

Would need to know the context of this photo but no, in general active US Navy ships don't look this bad.
Steel in salt water does create rusting issues and maintaining them is a 365 job. But that what BMs are for.

It looks like they are in the process of removing and replacing the “non-skid.” surface.
It is a shitty job that used to require a “deck crawler.” I have damaged hearing in one ear and I suspect it was due to using the deck crawler (and another tool called a needle gun).

Those needle guns can be extremely loud. Especially when youre in a compartment adjecent to a bulkhead that ones being used on.

Those guys are the most under appreciated enlisted service members of any branch. They do everything from maintaining the ship to driving it.

Try using one.
The hearing protection in the 80’s may as well have been cotton balls.

I work around them quite a bit, I weld on these boats. Definately want some good ear plugs.

At first I thought that was a scene from the movie Down Periscope

Looks to me like the deck is being rehabbed and they're not to the new paint/nonskid step yet.

Fair enough. Just seemed like an odd photo for the Navy to share that makes it look like they have unkempt ships.

When I was in the Navy, 62-69, the "Brass" believe an Idle mind was the devils workshop, they kept us busy. Crossed mop handles was the insignia of all sailors. That is why we were called Swabbies.
We polished brass and chipped paint. Two months prior to my discharge, I was eligible to be discharged two months early. But instead I was sent to a Submarine Tender. I was in a "Critical Rate" needed by the Navy. Two months was not enough time for my security clearance to be updated to my new duty station. So, I chipped rusty paint on the decks, getting it ready for a new coat of paint.

No money to repaint deck since we give all our printed money to Ukraine

Needle Gun is loud as hell.
The most thankless of thankless jobs…and BM’s have a lot of thankless but absolutely necessary jobs.
Deck Division and Auxiliary Division are vital to a Ship…but typically under appreciated.

Where’s Bilfinger or Dynamic when you need them?

It's a picture of muster. Nothing of real significance is going on, it's an on the job, daily life sort of photo.

Don’t forget the only enlisted rating to be able to hold command, in the Coast Guard at least. Lots of commands have an enlisted BM as the OIC, xpo, and ops boss.
