Why does it take a month to find out Las Vegas shooter's hard drive missing from laptop?

If he removed the hard drive before shooting himself, the implication is after the shooting started as they could have just said before the shooting. Given that, the hard drive would have to be in the room since Jesus was outside the door and supposedly shot 6 minutes prior to the shooting of the concert, he couldn’t have left. So how hard could it be to find a hard drive in a hotel room with a month to look for it?

It took a month for us to find out, not the authorities. They probably knew within the first 24hrs.

Why would a man about to kill himself, care enough to remove a hard drive and hide/destroy it?
This isnt a tin foil hat question, its a perfectly legitimate one. It doesnt make sense that this man wouldnt want people to know his motive. Even if you are mentally ill, you dont go through years of planning and a mass terrorist attack without airing whatever your grievance was.
