I'm not sure what you are referring to. I've given the example already, but 6'3", blue-eyed giant - Charlton Heston - played a diminutive Levantine in one of the most famous movies of all time. Liz Taylor played Cleopatra, FFS. Was that "altering historical figures"?

Minstrel shows were popular for many decades in this country - and yet, some around here seem wounded that those would even be perceived as a problem. At the very least, they seem SHOCKED that it would be perceived as sub-optimal from the standpoint of simple manners. I'm sure you're aware that A Birth of a Nation - one of the first "landmark" films - featured white actors in blackface. etc. etc.
Hollywood has been "race swapping" characters literally since its inception. BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN - just like with participating in wars around the world - we've begun pearl clutching about it.
And my earlier Jesus comment was not in jest - in many ways, Jesus has been "race swapped" in this country for centuries.
