Trump Backed Libyan Warlord After Saudi Arabia and Egypt Lobbied Him

The leaders of Saudi Arabia and Egypt successfully lobbied President Trump to shift U.S. policy in Libya and reach out to the general leading an offensive against the country’s United Nations-backed government, a senior U.S. administration official and two Saudi officials said.
In early April, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi urged Mr. Trump to back Gen. Khalifa Haftar, whose forces are seeking to capture the Libyan capital Tripoli amid a long-running battle for control of the oil-rich country.
About a week later, Mr. Trump called Gen. Haftar, and “discussed a shared vision for Libya’s transition to a stable, democratic political system,” the White House said.
That marked a significant shift in the American stance toward Gen. Haftar. For years, Washington has supported the United Nations-recognized government in Tripoli and worked with it in the war on Islamic State. Before Mr. Trump’s call, the U.S. had condemned the general’s offensive and called for a cease fire.
quote:
A week before Mr. Trump phoned Gen. Haftar, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said: “We have made clear that we oppose the military offensive by Khalifa Haftar’s forces.”
Since the two men’s conversation, the U.S. hasn’t repeated its previous firm calls for a cessation of hostilities.
quote:
The decision demonstrated how quickly Mr. Trump can pivot on key U.S. policies after conversations with some foreign leaders. He announced a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria following a phone conversation with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in December. In April, Mr. Trump decided to take steps to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist group after discussing the issue with Mr. Sisi, who has led a lethal crackdown on the Islamist movement in Egypt.
Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have provided air support to Gen. Haftar’s forces in recent years, according to a U.N. panel monitoring the international arms embargo on Libya. Egypt denies this, and the U.A.E. hasn’t acknowledged the documented presence of its aircraft in Libya.

The one thing that is certain, Muslim countries will always be violent regardless who is in control. Because of that I don’t care who we back politically, I just don’t want to give them weapons that they will later use against us or our allies.

Libya may be Islamic but it is North African not Middle Eastern. It's pretty much due South of Italy.
I guess Greece and Poland are now M.E. too?

My take. I guess better an ally in charge rather than an enemy (and by ally I mean a secular regime instead of a hostile islamic fundamentalist state) . Why we took down Ghadafi when he was no longer in the terror game completely eludes me? The country has been mired in anarchistic tribal fighting since.
This statement bothers me "“discussed a shared vision for Libya’s transition to a stable, democratic political system." Why do we feel the need to encourage a democratic political system on these people? If the people want that they have to fight for it themselves.
Isn't Libya just artificial construct, and Ottoman province, Italian war booty? Is there an real natural distinction that separates a Libyan culture from Tunisian, Algerian, and western Egyptian? Maybe that area would do better as a collection of distinct tribal nation states.

Isis has shifted from Syria to North Africa. Southern Libya is a mess.

K, so two semi-stable actors in the region asked Trump to back their player in the game...
quote:
United Nations-backed government
Never been a fan of this and am actually happy to see the U.S. finally stick their thumb in the U.N.'s eye... Pretty safe bet that the UN backed government is not the best government for U.S. interests in the region...
The big question though... Here it comes... Did Trump impose any tariffs? REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE....
