For many people, politics has become their religion. This is most true of atheists, who tend to be leftists.
Human beings are wired to seek something Bigger than themselves. When you reject God, a political movement is a natural substitute.

White shitlibs I know fall into three categories:
Old: folks still beholden to ABC, NBC, and CBS to tell them what to do. They've always been slanted, but in the era of Trump, it's been pure DNC propaganda.
Middle age: government employees (teachers fall into this group)
Young: positive social feedback for involvement in the latest "cause." Need to have skin in the game to realize how destructive the policies they advocate for are.
The biggest issue facing the GOP is that a large portion of that young group isn't growing up. The dem party dominates single women.

You could have just said the Republican Party used to be a party of conservatives and now it's a party of populists.

There’s a handful of people in my life that are this way and I cannot process it. I could 8-10 years ago, but the Democrat platform and headwind has changed so much since then.
