Because he, his minions, and his brother Earl, are some of the reasons Louisiana is still a backwards banana republic while his family is still reaping the benefits of his crooked deals and theft (Long Farm on Barringer-Foreman Road, any one?). He was a bandit who enriched himself and his cronies at the expense of the people he was supposed to serve. He put the notion into the heads of the people of Louisiana that everything should be paid for by somebody else, which is why this state is still a broke as an ugly stripper. He, at least, did right by LSU.
ETA: there are very few things that will get my 98-year old Dad riled up like Huey Long. I think he still to this day dislikes Huey more than he dislikes the Japanese.

Let's say you rob a store, and steal $1,000.
On the way home from the store, you stop off at the homeless shelter and give the non-profit $100.
Are you still a robber, or are you some great person?
That's basically what HP did. He robbed the state blind. Yes, he game some crumbs to the little people, but those pale in comparison to what he took.
People like him and Leander Perez are the scum of the earth and are a big reason why we are so backwards today, compared to other states.

They also started, or at least enshrined, the tradition of Louisiana voters supporting colorful characters who talk like they're from around here, instead of looking at backgrounds and platforms.

Leander was a die-hard Segregationist, though. All Huey saw was green.

Which is how we ended up with the snake oil salesman named Edwin Edwards.

This is true... but he stole land all the same.

Why do so many people despise Huey P Long

How long will it be before the statue removers demand that Judge Perez Drive be renamed?

Probably never. He is considered a hero in St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parish to this day.

He gave roads and schools and free textbooks.
He gave government contracts to his family and political allies to build those things, then skimmed his portion off the top. It's nice that we got the roads and schools, but those things could have been provided without the corruption. That's what tarnishes Long's legacy.

When has this ever stopped the renaming/statue removing zealots.

Does it cover how he left no doubt as to his love for LSU, and his hatred for Orleans.
Makes one wonder about his true intent in giving us Charity Hospital.
He had a photographic memory and socialist tendencies. He once offered the opinion that no one should accumulate more than three million dollars. Wonder if that played a part in that dentist showing up.
His son Russell was one of the "yes" votes for paying away the Panama Canal.
And then there was Earl.
