Actually, Ralph, that's an excellent question and I'm going to give you an honest answer.
The groups you mention were indeed leftists and they were not wimps. The difference between them and today's American leftists is what I have often called "60s Envy."
A lot of American boys went into WW I (where we had no real threat) because they had 'Civil War Envy.' They grew up with grandpa telling them how he killed 100 rebels/yanks with his bare hands.
Today's leftists grew up learning about the 60s. It was glorious... Hippies, Drugs, Viet Nam, Sexual revolution, Racial injustice, etc. The kids who heard these stories are now in their 20s and 30s and they miss having the experience. They are led by the 60 year old profs in college who were there and never got over their radicalism.

I agree to a point. But I do think that given the repression that Trump and the Republicans will do it will drive some leftists to think about other strategies.
