quote:Louisiana was still a largely democrat led state at that time. We had our first Republican governor since reconstruction in 1980, but our next wasn’t until 1996 with Foster. While we were trending Republican in 92 & 96 we weren’t there yet (still aren’t totally as we’ve had 12 years of Democrat governors and only 9 years of Republican governors since Foster left in 2004.
Why did Louisiana, South, middle America vote Democrat in '92 and '96?
We even had 2 democrat senators from the state up until the 2000s.

Clinton was a characteristic and likable candidate. The national version of Edwin Edwards.
When I registered to vote in 1976 there was no such thing as a Republican Party in Louisiana. That started to change a little when Dave Treen came along.

I don't think so. Everybody I knew voted for Clinton, not Ross Perot, and certainly not for Bush. His personal appeal was through the roof in 1992, esp with women

“Southern Democrat” was still a thing at that time. The amount of fricking the South got from that helped flip the states permanently by 2000.

Clinton was VERY popular. My parents almost always voted R historically and even they liked him. The guy was slick when he first burst on the scene. It was also a MUCH different world and the gulf war was not popular. HW had zero charisma and DQ was basically a meme.
