Because extra power, fuel efficiency, safety, and creature comforts are in demand.

Regulatory requirements have driven us to grovel at the feet of the chip gods.

Let me mandate a more complex car, as long as I get to control it and you pay more for it.

Along with all the other pitfalls, these things are mandated. And YOU get the bill.

But then you wouldnt be forced to go to them for every little repair

This is what it is really all about. Dealers depend on parts and service for their profits.

When WWIII hits.. China will shut off the chip market and this nation will be walking.

don’t really know if this is still possible, or how expensive it would be to retrofit the manufacturing process, but couldn’t some cars be made without chips like the old days. I know personally, I’d prefer a more simple vehicle, especially for work, that didn’t cost thousands to fix when it broke.

You know you can open a few catalogs now and build first gen Camaros, Chevelles, Mustangs, and some Chrysler cars from all new parts from the ground up. You can point and click your way right into a 69 Camaro SS convertible. 0 miles. 0 rust.

Sure you are. If you can’t assemble it.. hire it out. Hell…. You can call a resto shop, tell them to build it, write them a check, and go pick up the car. No different than ordering a new vehicle you want now.

Yes, we can go back to the 70's and make the Pinto and Vega again as well...

Why do people make stupid false narratives like this?
No, the choice isn’t a overly chipped car or a Vega

This is why there is a chip in the power window switch in your car.

Anyone with a modicum of skill can replace the switch in minutes. It won't work until the computer is flashed at the dealer however. For a price. Usually an hour minimum charge.

I'm laughing at the OP for wanting to go back to essentially carbureted cars.

The computers in the cars are why a 4 cylinder has way more power than a 350 from 1979 while getting more than double the mileage and 10% of the emissions

I can guarantee, if more cars were built simpler and cheaper, there would be a large market for them.

They can't be built today due to government mandated emissions and fuel economy regs.

Because vehicles have 142 sensors these days due to the constant Political drive for emissions monitoring.

Also due to our ever growing demand for comfort. Too many bells and whistles.

They can have my auto start/stop chip. At next oil change I'll ask the dealer if they can remove

This isn't true at all. A computer chip or program, cant add power to an engine, it can only control and limit it.
Modern engines are built the way racing engines use to be built, and then they use computers to detune by limiting the fuel/air allowed through the injectors, and decrease spark advance. If they sell you a "performance upgrade" it's just a computer program with higher limits.

If you removed all computer limits from these engines, they would perform at maximum output with the proper tuning.
