Why are most people that are in the military conservative?

Most of your "women and people of color" in the military are the antithesis of conservative. You'd be surprised how many SJW's and soy boys are in the military these days.

Which is why Democrats have a hard-on for LOWERING military standards for recruitment and physical training standards AS WELL as getting rid of "don't ask don't tell".
The Left have been doing their damndest to fill the military with "their" guys for quite a while.

Unfortunately, there are a lot who are in it just for a job. They have zero interest in protecting our country and are NOT patriotic in the least.
Fortunately, they aren't the majority, and hopefully, some will come out of the experience with more self discipline and respect for others.

That isn't true. Some are in it just for a paycheck. I generally believe that we should be grateful for those serving, but I admit to have a hard time with the lefties or anti-American service people or those with an agenda like those dirt bag brothers who started the whole impeachment scam with a "leak".

a. There's right and there is wrong. It's clear.
b. There is no right/wrong. It's all grey area.
Jury selection programs used by lawyers help them select the brain they want on the jury. If your client is guilty you want 'b'. That's why they reject military vets. The military is attractive to 'a' thinking.
Conservatives lean 'a'. Liberals lean 'b.'

Liberalism only flourishes because basic needs are met. When you have food, clothing and shelter access to available as for it to be a given, you have more time to worry about the less important things in life. As the givens are no longer a chief worry, these lesser issues take their place as primary concerns.
Those in the military lead more of a life where although basic needs are met, the job of keeping them can be an almost constant conflict, meaning they are more likely to actually be fighting to gain and keep them (and on an ongoing basis). This keeps those aspects of life at the forefront of their minds, making them less likely to be taken for granted.

Affirmative action and the 2nd/3rd stringers who are POGs in Ash & Trash units. Not very prevalent in combat arms units.
