Sure, Putin has definite tendencies to be a dictator. I don't think he's in a Hugo Chavez/Stalin/Castro ballpark, but he certainly wants power like that.

However, nobody gave any fricks about China, and they're arguably worse. Since when do we really give a shite if they guy isn't out there slaughtering or starving his population?

I was watching some Olympic coverage and it seems that is all the American press talked about, citing no real examples. What examples do people have of him being this evil despot? Sure, he's crooked as all get out, but this comes off as an agenda.

Is it mainly the butthurt Obama fans mad that Putin embarrassed Obama through the whole Snowden thing?

Or is it because he doesn't like gays? (he doesn't have to for the record.)

Seriously, explain to me why I should have the level of hatred for Russia and Putin that the press is saying I should have.

i'm guessing it's the very public anti-gay stuff leading up to the games

Apparently there is not enough TP for reporters bungholes so they're a little butthurt. And the water is apparently undrinkable and pillows are scarce too. So that makes them grumpy.

This probably has something to do with the butthurt too.

funny that nobody else except western media is bitching. The athletes all said they were pleasantly surprised.

Plus, all this terrorist attack talk and bombing shite is fricking rich coming from the Americans being as we're the only country whose had a bombing at our Olympic games.

IMHO, Both.

You can throw Syria in there too.

Well, give me some proof. I'm not saying I'm not wrong. I just don't see anything that points to that direction yet.

I'll say this, if he starts persecuting the gays like the jews (I heard this reference, which is completely disrespectful to the Jews), then America is fricked. We don't wanna go to war with Russia over that.

Here's where you lost me. I'm no Chavez fan, but he's not in the same class as Stalin and Castro, and Castro isn't in the same class Stalin. Stalin belongs in a class with Hitler and Mao. Furthermore, Chavez was more democratic than Putin since he did actually experience some electoral defeats while he was in office. Castro is totally undemocratic but he's not the genocidal maniac that Stalin was.

Read Putin's Labyrinth.

Also the guy below says you're wrong, too.

His name was Alexander Litvinenko. He was in the KGB and he fled Russia after exposing the atrocities committed by Russian secret service agents in Chechnya. Putin had him poisoned using a radioactive powder dissolved in his tea. Putin sent one of Litvinenko's best friends to England where A.L. had fled to just to poison his former KGB comrade.

Comparing Hugo Chavez to Stalin is pretty stupid, FWIW.

We expect more from the Russians?

Honestly I think its the timing. These are issues that are current in Russia.

If Tiananmen Square had happened 3 months before the Chinese olympics it would have mattered.

I didn't mean to make them equivalent. I was listing government leaders who were on the dictatorial side, no comparison meant between the 3. My point was saying that I think Putin has dictatorial tendencies, but not to the level of Chavez, Stalin, or Castro.

Because they have laws against gay propaganda. That alone makes them evil and bad.

I'm not saying Putin wasn't behind it, but linking him directly is like linking any US president to wrongdoing by the CIA/NSA, which the US has plenty of.

The surveillance put up by the NSA is very dictatorial, for example.

You're very naive if you believe Putin didn't order Litvinenko's murder. Not just 'aware' of it, but actually giving the order to kill him.

ETA: And following Litvinenko's murder, Putin helped the murderer get elected to the Russian parliament thus giving the killer immunity from prosecution and extradition to Britain.
