The honest answer is so that if it's ever needed I have plenty of rounds to send at the guy trying to kill me.
Let's be real about it.
We need them to protect ourselves from the government if needed. Any other argument is disingenuous.

"Why do you need" is a bullshite question applied to a constitutionally-protected right, you know this
Flip it around and try "why does the government need to limit the number of rounds in magazines"

You'd be outlawing a lot of very common firearms like most full sized semi automatic pistols.

That won't turn out well for them.

Safe bet will be California gun laws
The courts reversed the Calif law on high capacity mags. Previously, mags couldn't hold more than 7 rounds. Now, my 15 round mags for my 9mm are legal again.
One of the few sane things that has happened in the state in recent years.

The number of full size handguns in America probably dwarfs the number of AR style guns.

Dont downvote me to oblivion I'm just asking
If you live somewhere like me that has steadily being taken over by wild hogs over the past 15 years the answer is yes. They are a serious problem and you really can’t kill them fast enough to keep their numbers down without getting creative

Good thing I just bought 5 more "high capacity" mags

Colt 1911 45 ACP came with 8 round mag, so I’m going with > 8 rounds will be considered high-cap.

Actually yes, there are plenty of videos with LEO involved shootings where the LEO has to unload his magazine to stop someone.
There is a difference between hitting someone with a fatal round and one that will actually stop that person so that he is no longer an immediate threat. A person can take what may be a fatal shot and still stay in the fight.
There was a study that showed that LEO's only hit their intended target about 20% of the time. Granted that study was from NYC where, in all their left wing wisdom, the city mandated extremely heavy triggers (I think around 9lbs). The people who know nothing about firearms, but love to regulate them anyway, reasoned that the heavier trigger would make accidental discharges less likely. In fact what it did was make it more difficult for the LEO's to fire accurately.
In any event, out of a ten round magazine that comes out to just two rounds on target -- and that would be for a supposedly trained LEO. Now consider that there may be more than one threat.
Pistol calibers fired out of short barrels have a lot less "stopping power" than one might think.
