This is somewhat of a spin off thread from the VA militia thread.

My sixth grade class in Mississippi had a fun safety class where we all learned how to shoot a gun. This was in the late 70’s. Anyone else have such a class??

We called it Hunter Education class and took it with our P.E. coach.
The card is needed to be able to obtain your hunting license.

My public high school had mandatory ROTC for boys. We had an indoor rifle range where we shot 22s. It was no longe mandatorily after the seventies but the program is still active and we have a nationally ranked sharpshooter team.

Mandatory Hunter Education included with freshman Civics. One week.

We watched films, then went to the National Guard Armory and shot .22 rifles.

My favorite story on this front is that my 5th grade field trip included a stop at the French Market. There were vendors back then who sold Japanese throwing stars, butterfly knives, nunchucks, etc. We loaded up on those and brought them back to school with us on the bus. Nobody batted an eye.

Nope - we were expected to already have that down pat way before. Like ABC's and The Lord's Prayer.

I was in school in the 80s and 90s. They had already started dumbing people down by that point.

I went to a public high school in Texas in the late 80s. We had mandatory hunter education that was mostly firearm safety.

Imagine the outrage today. :(

I shot in ROTC in high school but still had to take a hunter’s education course as part of the ROTC core....

You'd still see visible hunting rifles in the school parking lot during that time.

It amazes me how drastically this nation has changed in the last 40 years. There have been sweeping periods of change throughout US History that have been much shorter; but most were related to wars or mechanization.
This slow crawl to completely overhaul American social norms is frightening. If you aren’t paying attention, you might not even realize it.

I don’t think it is a slow crawl anymore. It is a full blown sprint.

Jr High, class was outdoor Ed and we shot BB guns and bows. Think it was 78 if I member rightly, it’s on my hunter Ed card. Totes and boat and shot gun to school most days during high school with a change of clothes.

Not I. We did have our shotguns in the gun rack in rear window of the pickup truck though.

Boy Scouts. Various camps and Philmont.

Taught my son and some of his friends. Skeet at a club and rifle/handgun at a kaolin pit.

I employed the "Barney Fife" protocol...You only get one bullet.

My wife thought I was running a poorly paid "sweat shop" after I taught them how to reload shotgun shells. My reply "I pay for the clay".
