Back when I was in HS we had ROTC and learned to shoot M1 Garands and M1As
My wife and I (she is my 2nd and my last) had a son not long after we were married (my first wife gave me all girls) and my Son had both a Hunter's Safety Course in HS which he had to take in order to get his hunting license, and he did a Criminal Justice Course in HS that did a couple of weeks of handgun safety.
My second oldest daughter was a problem child for me until we sent her to Culver Military Academy where she blossomed, was on the equestrian team, the drill team and the rifle team. But she came home really proficient with both a 1911 and M9.

New England Jr high school had a small bore range in the basement. Basic rifle marksmanship and safety with 22s.
