A man broke into a San Jose house and raped a child in an apparently random attack, authorities said.

Dupree Kenneth Hornsby, 24, grabbed the 8-year-old girl while she played in the Damsen Drive house the morning of Aug. 6, officials said.

Hornsby allegedly locked the door and sexually assaulted the girl, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

When he let her go, she ran to a family member in the house who later chased Hornsby out, city police said.

“The suspect was a stranger with no prior associations to the juvenile victim,” said a statement from the San Jose Police Department.

Police got the report at about 7:30 a.m. and a patrol officer recognized Hornsby from his description, walking on a street a mile away a little more than an hour later, according to releases.

Hornsby, whose last known address is Stockton, is facing life behind bars after he was slapped with eight felony sex crime counts including rape of a child.

“This nightmare of a crime has shaken us all,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement. “The alert police officer who saw and arrested this predator just hours later, and before anyone else was hurt, is a credit to the badge and our community.”
