It is something that, to them, is derogatory. The people you’re talking about want to deride those that want a white nation. White nationalist was the terminology that they believe best describe that person.
Again, if you’re not that person, and you self identify as a white nationalist, then the misunderstanding is simply going to occur. So you can either use a different term to self identify, you can spend a whole lot of time trying to convince people that you’re a different type of white nationalist, or you can just accept that a lot of people are going to admonish and look down on you simply out of misunderstanding. Your call which.

That term you thought you heard was really “Mexican Nationals”, not “Mexican Nationalists .
“Mexican Nationals” a way of saying “Citizens of Mexico”. There are thousands of Mexican Nationals in El Paso, visiting lawfully.
You won’t hear the term “Mexican Nationalists” very much because Mexicans already have their own country, Mexico. If you hear it, it’s probably in reference to Mexicans pre-independence in 1810.

But....but you can easily go and see that this is false. The term White Nationalist has been around since like the 60s....and its never been good.
