No, I think it's not an uncommon thing in human history. It also hearkens back to the Puritanism in our early beginnings as a country. The left has revived that into this new social trend whereby happiness and joy are seen as guilty pleasures that are simply temptations by the devil to lure them away from focusing on their god (identity politics). That's why they're so mad all the time. They feel that expressing joy and happiness is wrong because there are "subjugated people" out there who are being "oppressed". So, they've been trained to feel guilty and horrible every time they feel happiness because, while they're enjoying themselves, there are those that don't have that feeling and need help. I don't think this is a mental issue, but rather an ancient byproduct of religious zealotry.

I believe what we’re seeing is a combination of our current cultures focus on celebrity (ie look at me I want to be famous) and the juvenile need to be perceived as cool and part of the club.
These individuals are emotionally immature...the typical liberal man child who has a meaningless existence, is easily offended and is obsessed by everyone’s perception of them. Couple that with access to the internet and their constant need to impress their peers - you get this level of virtue signaling where they actually think it makes them more popular to hate their own race.
