property taxes?

Are local only. They serve essentially as a lien against your property so that you are able to access utilities, communications, roads (aka infrastructure) to schools, mail, stores, legal system, packages, hospitals, bridges, etc that you use for commerce daily

If you pay that lien each year, your house is free and clear

They have no means to refuse your access to their infrastructure, so they just file a 'lien' instead. Due at the end of each year

Not your property taxes. 100% locally paid

I think/thought I saw something the other day about Elon/DOGE or maybe Trump coming out against property taxes.

That is a state and local tax issue. Trump did propose eliminating the SALT deduction cap that was in the TCJA.

Yet fail to pay that “lien” and you will find yourself on the street with your property being liquidated at a sheriff’s sale

True

But youre never profiting from selling that house, with an actual lien on it. In fact, your mortgage is considered a lien. So someone cant really claim "ownership" of the home with a mortgage attached

And that lien holder REQUIRES that taxes are paid

So you’re paying property taxes to the IRS? Somebody is scamming you.

Wouldn't surprise me someone from the IRS trying to do this shite.

Apartment complexes and landlords pay property taxes and pass the cost along in the price they charge for rent.

So you think a person renting a 2br apartment is paying the same pass-thru tax as a family with a 3,000+sf house in the same zip code?

Since it’s public information here in GA, I picked an apartment complex that was built near our kids’ schools. If you take the total paid ($773,000) and divide by the units… each unit is paying a whopping $1,100 into the tax coffers.

Now, it may surprise you… but guess which place has more police and fire activity? Would you guess an apartment complex or a neighborhood of million dollar homes?

And it might also surprise you, but the density of kids per unit at apartments like this is way higher than the same neighborhood mentioned above.

It takes 2 or more buses to pick up the kids there for each school.

I digress. I just don’t think they pay their “fair share,” comparatively speaking. Taxes based on assessments seem so arbitrary.

You didn’t read the sentence. Tourism and business. Any city can encourage one or the other or both.

We own a lot of property in very poor counties. We get butt-raped every year with school taxes and now an ambulance tax. Homeowners may get hit once, but we get hit with fees on each tract. It’s ridiculous.

There’s no good solution, but I can’t stand the current state of things.
