This isn’t Cruz pre Trump. Trump being president helped bring this Cruz along into the savage he is present day.

Trump was needed in 2016.
Cruz, if you hadn't noticed, has largely followed Trump's lead in how you deal with these people. Granted, he's way more eloquent and knowledgeable, but Cruz of 2020 is a different presentation than Cruz of 2016. Fundamentally I'm sure he's the same, but now he doesn't hold back his punches.

And that was my absolute conviction until Trump started actually acting on his campaign promises - and in that I could not distinguish his actions from what I would have wanted from Cruz - just probably with more rhetorical flourish and understanding of history/philosophy.

Ted wouldn’t have survived 30 days of the onslaught that Trump took on. And don’t think for a millisecond Ted wouldn’t have received the same bullshite treatment if he had beaten the evil bitch. Hopefully he has learned something from Trump that will help him if he decides to run again.
