The reality is for most professionals.if you met someone with an IQ of 100, you would think they are a drooling moron.

I don't think this is accurate. Maybe if you tried to hold intellectual conversation with these people... but there are plenty of people with average intelligence who are in positions that would surprise you.

I took one when I was 7. My parents won't tell me the score, even though I am in my 40s. My father's exact quote is "it will go to your head."

I know it was higher than my sister, as my father told me that too.

If you just tried to have a conversation with them. I have a friend who is a janitor. great guy, but he misses all sorts of context. He is smart enough to know to keep his mouth shut. But he will often ask me what something means after the fact.

I have no idea what his IQ is.

yeah but you're talking about a super selective portion of the total population (that is already skewed highly)

the posters with the 100-ish IQs aren't going to flood this thread to possibly position themselves to be called retarded

One never knows, but we might assume that a board boasting an average IQ of 140 would have certain markers similar to other subgroups with an average IQ in that range—more elite educations, more industry leaders and persons of note, a few spacey professors or philosophers. For comparison, the average IQ of the Nazi leaders tested at Nuremberg was in the low-mid 130s, and they were considered a very smart group of men. We have some physicians, a bunch of attorneys, a lot of engineers or tradesmen in the petroleum industry, some military, and an improbable number of small-business owners. Most have fairly middling credentials and are in professions noted for above-average but not exceptional intelligence (let’s say about 1.5 standard deviation above the mean). I’m not saying that to be demeaning, but 140 IQs are pretty rare (about .7% of the population). I don't think it plausible that it’s this board’s average—this board or any other not centered on high-IQ fields or focused on intelligence itself.

His IQ is almost certainly lower than average.

the hidden competition b/w me and my sister has been interesting over the years. we're definitely on 2 opposite ends of the spectrum (she's a passionate, hard working person who is very artistic and i'm lazy and a cold robot in many ways)

she scored higher on the ACT but she had bullshite time extensions b/c she was diagnosed with ADD. i refused to get diagnosed with it, even though i could have, because i saw it as cheating and a crutch/weakness

I have no idea what my IQ may be. Never took a test to determine the number. I do have two chemical engineering degrees and a responsible job so I'm almost certain I'm not stupid.

In today's America not being stupid gives you a tremendous advantage.

Of course TD.com has the largest concentration of MENSA members. It goes with the 4.3 40 that many midlife men here can still run while lugging around their 9" penises and wallet full of play cash that is at least double the median income level.

While 139 is high, this board has quite a few lawyers and tech types. I wouldn't be surprised if they have IQs over 120.
I’m sure many here have 120+ IQs. That’s quite a bit different from a 140 IQ. One is about 1/170. The other is about 1/10.

i'm not saying this board is anywhere near 140

i'm saying that the IQ of this board could legitimately appear to be over 140 if the right set of posters are the only ones contributing scores. within the actual thread, it's much more likely people who can peacock are posting and those who feel inferior won't, which will artificially increase the sample. add in some lying and a very small sample and you get 140

Your theory falls apart because not everyone who posts on the board is posting his/her IQ level. It's likely that not everyone who posts on this board has ever even taken an IQ test.

you know, we had a similar discussion/argument on the OT years ago and i'm pretty sure one poster admitted to having an IQ around 80

and he was a cop

While ACT and SAT correlate with IQ measures and load on G, it would be possible to predict one's IQ with those tests; however, a major confounder is that SAT and ACT score distributions are derived from individuals who are disproportionately represented by college-bound students while IQ distribution are derived from the population as a whole. In addition, we don't know whether the factors to take either the ACT or SAT impacts the representativeness either.

National Center for Education Statistics ACT Averages and Standard Deviations

It appears that mean and standard deviations of the ACT are roughly 21 (20.98) and 4.9 (4.87) respectively. So with an ACT score of 29, that yields a z-score of ~ 1.65 which is equivalent to a standard score (scores used in IQ tests) of about 125.

Assuming a 0.7 correlation with IQ, we can regress the 125 to yield a predicted IQ score would be about 118 with a standard error of the estimate of about 10.7. However, since the ACT distribution is likely skewed higher than the normal population because of the college-bound selection bias, then the predicted score would then be even higher, with the extent dependent on the extent of the skew.

I agree with your calculation that ACT 29 should be around IQ 125.
I misread his ACT score and thought it was 27, so I guessed his IQ would be around 115.
I never took ACT or IQ test, but I guess my IQ would be around 140 and my ACT would be 33-34 if I took a test.

You probably think that because it in fact is NOT plausible.

One can just read about 10 threads on the Poli board and tell that the average IQ of this board may be slightly higher than the average IQ of every day America, but not by that much.

I wouldn’t call it a theory; it’s more a qualified assessment. And in spite of the folk myth, successful people brag. The people posting their scores are probably among those who at least think they scored well (online tests don’t count). So I would expect to see an over-representation of my notional group of elites.

If people really want to know Chicken can hire me to do the testing, assuming everyone consents to having their IQ posted online. My competing wouldn't be fair as I know the answers, having administered the tests thousands of times.

Even if the distribution curve of this board is right-skewed, I'd never believe, given the content that has been posted on this board the last ten years, that we have anyone near 140.
