10 or 15 years ago now? The left is always trying to manipulate language to advance their agenda. You're right, they are illegal aliens, nothing more or less. What annoys me is when the conservative media adopts leftist language because of the dictates of the business lobby.

We have too many people here and its a drain on society and government resources that should be used for American CITIZENS. Unless you're some nuclear rocket engineer that can land someone on Mars or can cure cancer, there is nothing compelling about anyone trying to get in that an American citizen can't already do or accomplish.

simple words and truthful definitions are the coin of the realm - argue your nuances all you want - but always from a basis of simple facts and definitions.
90% of all the disagreements are based on these mangled up definitions of what is being discussed. One side with a different idea of the topic relative to the other side = no agreement can ever be reached.

I'm not opposed to merit based immigration or a system more heavily weighted towards merit.

There's no deflection. You wrote about deporting people who are here legally. If there was significant immigration reform, you'd have transition rules that would almost surely allow for voluntary departure once visas expired. That's not the same as deportation.

They can stay the length of their visas already obtained, but once they run out and they don't meet the merit qualifications to stay (i.e. nuclear engineer, rocket technician, cure to cancer, etc.), then its time to go bye bye and the visa will not be renewed.
