I think a lot ideals still hold most people together in the US and chiefly this is an idea of representative democracy that was solidified after the Civil War. For good or bad the idea that came out the civil war was individual rights, not matter what you look like or sound like or how you pray matters as long as you are American. You have rights that the Federal Gov will defend you.

Most Americans believe in this idea of America now. We are the majority on the right on this issue. And most think this is how we as a country should work.

This was was normative view until around 2012 or so...What we are seeing with the Marxist left/Democratic party base, is that this idea of individual rights is not true to them and what matters more is your group identity and then the intersectional, aka how many ways you can claim group oppression, is what matters more than individual equal rights.

In this case it's illegal immigrants. But it could easily be trans identity, or racial identify or gender/sex etc. They are collectivists and what matters is standing for the "class" who they see is being "oppressed." It matters not that this is true, we have 30+ years of training guiding prog foot soldiers on this.

For all his flaws Trump is actually defending individual rights when he stand against the mob and MN and MSP elite on this issue
