What will Russia do if Ukraine re-takes Crimea?

With the recent comments of Trump supporting Ukraine and seemingly fully taking their side and hoping they can end the war (see: President Trump Says He Supports Ukrainian Long-Range Strikes Deep Inside Russia), focus should go to Crimea, as Ukraine has Crimea under siege and Russia has lost the ability to do much about it.

It doesn't seem Russia has any way to stop this and it's a matter of time if they can force Ukraine to divert resources elsewhere to remove them from Ukraine. Also, you have to note this Crimea operation is in conjunction with the increase in attacks (now Trump-sanctioned) into Russian territory.
Is this the line where Putin could not survive? Will the oligarchs kill and replace him if he loses Crimea? Will he go fully irrational to stop this reality from occurring?
Russia is clearly weak. Crimea is worth 100x to Russia what the eastern provinces Russia took are worth. Crimea is symbolic, which is why after the Russian-influenced shenanigans that led to Maidan in 2013-2014 caused complete chaos, Russia took Crimea. Crimea is also where the Sevastopol Naval Base is located, and if Russia loses this their already shitty navy becomes impotent for 2/3 of the world.
Also of note, Russia is losing in Mali to a domestic Al Quaeda outfit
The invasion of Ukraine is turning into one of the dumbest military-political moves in decades, if not centuries. And, remember, this is without direct NATO involvement. At this point, I wonder if any Russians wish NATO had been directly involved at the outset to cause them to immediately lose the war, because what actually unfolded is losing the war WITH insurmountable losses (economnic, population, standing in the world, etc.)

Ukraine has been forcefully striking strategic routes that act as a lifeline for Russia’s military occupation of Crimea. At the same time, the Kremlin talks tough and is in denial about the possibility of losing territory it has illegally occupied since 2014.
Predominantly using drones, Ukraine has repeatedly targeted military logistics route R-280, which connects Simferopol and Mariupol, including the bridge linking Kherson Oblast with Crimea. The results can be spectacular (see here) and have caused a sharp fall-off in truck traffic. It has also hit oil refineries, Russian vessels, and air defense systems on the peninsula.
This is very much a siege in the modern sense of the term, with serious effects resulting from militarily enforced isolation. It is making the occupation harder. Russian authorities have suspended and reduced passenger train services in Crimea, potential vacationers are canceling their summer hotel bookings, and hundreds of drivers are forced to line up for fuel.
“We will… make it extremely difficult for any military personnel or those working in the defense industry to remain in Crimea, in the temporarily occupied territories, or use the access routes to them,” Ukraine drone commander “Magyar” Brovdi told Reuters on June 11.

As the reunification of Crimea with Ukraine becomes a realistic possibility in the eyes of Western skeptics, Ukraine can expect more diplomatic and military support for de-occupation. And the prospect of Russia losing control of such prized Ukrainian territory carries massive symbolic weight.
The peninsula’s cities, such as Yalta and Sevastopol, were heavily integrated into Soviet mythology due to their military significance in World War II and the Cold War. “In the hearts and minds of people, Crimea has always been an inseparable part of Russia,” Putin said at the time of the annexation in March 2014. He has repeatedly said the issue of Crimea is “closed.”
But each Ukrainian drone strike shakes Russian confidence.
When Putin annexed Crimea, he could not have imagined the possibility of swarms of drones and an innovative Ukrainian military-industrial complex threatening his grip. Indeed, eight years later, he believed he would be able to take Kyiv in three days with little damage to his forces.
Russian hubris has meant strategic assets and routes remain exposed and poorly defended, allowing Ukrainian forces to attack them drone by drone. Russia is failing to replenish resources and shore up defenses, and, if the Kerch Bridge is destroyed or made unusable, the outlook for Moscow will be even tougher.

They will send an Oreshnik to Germany or the U.K. for providing assistance and all hell is going to break loose.

The issue is that if Russia doesn't go fully nuclear, as in "end of the world" nuclear, they are so incredibly weak militarily that Russia risks occupation (the Western-European portion at least). China cannot save them, and I doubt they would even try.
Russia had no chance in a conventional war with the US/NATO in 2022. They've only shown weakness and had their military and fighting-age population decimated since. Russia has no counter to the F22, let alone the F35.

This would definitely pop it off. Putin would target Kiev immediately. It would be Interesting. People in Crimea would rather be Russian by the way.

Well that isn't going to happen so the question is not relevant to reality. But to entertain the idea I will answer. Russia will take it back that is what Russia would do.
Crimea is difficult to protect because all access routes are very limited and almost impossible to protect. Ukraine can't prevent Russia from making gains in areas that it is desperately trying to protect that are very defensible. So how the hell is Ukraine going to take and hold Crimea?
What is going on right now is Russia is making gains in key areas that have remained under Ukrainian control for 4 years. And what is Ukraine doing. Moving resources (people) around to attack the least important areas just to show they have slowed the advance to a stand still.
It only works short term and weakens Ukraine more long term because it allows Russia to take areas more quickly that hold strategical importance. After the access hubs fall the areas Ukraine took back will fall again because they will be harder to supply due to access routes being corridors of death subject to enemy fire.

They can't even keep it.
They don't seem to have the men or military to "take it back" anymore

Crimes is exponentially more valuable than what Russia has taken
If Russia diverts its Frontline resources to Crimes, then Ukraine will be able to retake those areas on the front.

Ukraine isn’t capable of physically taking Ukraine but it’s becoming increasingly costly for Russia to keep it as well.
A realistic path to peace at this point could possibly mean Crimea becoming an independent state that Russia can keep a naval base on but They have to give back a significant portion of terrirory to Ukraine. Specifically the land just to the north of the Crimean peninsula.

How much land area has Ukraine retaken in Crimea as of today? Don’t see that in your post

Wrong. Dropping a flag from a drone doesn't mean Crimea has fallen. They have held Crimea for years including many years before this war officially started.

Not true. And they don't need to take it back since they already have it.

Sounds good but the opposite is what is happening. Ukraine is the country that is diverting recourses and on top of that they are out of missile defense weaponry. They have zero defense even in Kiev against incoming Russian military. Despite what you have been told, Ukrainian military is the military that is being degraded.

I’m not saying Ukraine is winning at this point. The war is still mostly a stalemate at this point. But the Russian military is definitely being degraded.
Theres a reason that Trump is more willing to support Ukraine now and that’s because he sees the tides shifting.
Hell, Russia is getting its arse kicked by a bunch of Tuareg rebels in Mali right now too.

Ukraine will need way more offensive capabilities than it currently has to take back Crimea
Posted on 7/9/26 at 9:36 am to SlowFlowPro
At this point.. I don't GAS if Crimea crumbles into powder and dissolves into the Black Sea. I am sick of Ukraine and their begging arse leader just as it appears all the Ukraine freaks with their Ukrainian flags that have disappeared from their profiles are.

Russia can't divert resources to Crimea to protect it and Ukraine is cutting Crimea off from Russia. What exactly is Russia going to do?

The delusion in this whole thread is breathtaking. Shooting things over the horizon and blowing stuff up isn’t the same as taking huge swathes of territory. As a reminder, occupation of Russia has been tried before.
Russia will go nuclear before it loses Crimea.

It has nothing to do with what Russians are going to do. Ukraine would have to retake a large portion of territory just to begin staging and offensive operations to retake Crimea. They would run into the same problems that Russia has been facing this whole war. Well placed heavily defended areas that would be a meat grinder to break through. Due to manpower differences Russia can currently afford to fight this kind of war though it's not by their choice. Ukraine can't.

What are they going to nuke Kiev? Do you think the world, even Trump, is just gonna let that slide? All of the assets currently in Europe and the ME currently bombing Iran would start bombing the shite out of every Russian troop formation in Ukraine. Theres Europeans would join in too.
Putin isn’t an idiot. He knows this.

ukraine and to a lesser extent iran is proof that we need to have all hands on deck creating anti drone technologies that can fight cheap drone technology with cheap anti drone technology.

Yeah, I don't know enough about the situation to battle with SFP (I'm not even saying he's wrong). But, I follow a decent amount of indy media content that is borderline pro-Russian (these guys would just say it's realism) and I would say omegaman in this thread provides a good summary of their position. An overarching theme the past few years is that Ukraine can pour resources/men into areas and get short-term wins, but they end up slaughtered in the long run.
I have no idea if the drones are wearing down Russia or just a nuisance. This conflict is very much a propaganda war/psy-op.

You're describing scenarios of symmetrical response.
If Russia can't get military assets into Crimea to defend it, the scenario would be asymmetrical
