Based on the 1860 U.S. Census, only about 8% of American families owned slaves, and these were concentrated in the South. Most white American families actually did not own slaves.

i had links before that said less than 7% in the south owned slaves.

I can directly trace my roots back to the Trail of Tears within a few generations. My cousin literally got all of her college paid for to go to Oklahoma by the Cherokee Foundation. It doesn't matter to these people. My skin is too light so I have too much of an advantage.

Who cares? What is the 2020 percentage?

Someone would argue the percentage of slave owners in the US has only dropped 3% since the 1800s

What percentage of people today own airplanes? I’d bet the % would be about in that range.

About 198,000 GA (general aviation) planes are privately owned in the US. Some folks own more than one, charter companies and "shared" ownership companies are in that number as well. As a rough estimate I would say about 200,000 people own a plane in the US.

Thanks for sharing the link. LA had close to 50% slaves. The list of professions was interesting. Most of those professions would not have supported slave ownership. Did note close to 6500 planters. That’s about 1.8% of the white population. That profession likely owned the vast %’age of slaves. If the average planter owned 50 slaves that pretty well accounts for all of them. It would be interesting to get more data on this. I still say most folks in no way could afford a slave.

That a low number like 0.06% so obviously more southern whites as a percentage owned slaves. It’s an interesting question.

0% of Americans are slaveowners today.

Except Lebron, he's a yuuuge slaveowner.

Using household ownership is like saying a child co-owns his father's house. Figures lie and liars figure. Seven percent is close to the correct answer.

A good slave would run you about $1k in 1860... so I'd equate it closer to: how many families own more than one mortgage-free house... which would probably be in the 3 to 5% range.

Some very interesting info:

Page XV of the introduction was particularly interesting, providing Native American ownership of slaves. Hadn't seen that before.

I think the more relevant number is families. If half of families owned slaves, then that's pretty significant. What would be comparable. Owning a house over 300k? That's a significant amount of people.
