What was the actual percentage of white slave owners in 1860

I've seen this argued as being between 3% and 32%. Which is it, and what is the best source of info on this?

The 1860 census shows that in the states that would eventually secede from the Union, an average of more than 32% of white families owned slaves. Roughly 50% of the families in Mississippi owned at least one slave. So I'd consider the practice pretty widespread when almost a third of southern families actually owned slaves.

And the census was not at all accurate in the 19th century. People had to get mail, as well as answer the census, which most did not.

He’s implementing his own formula because the official census only has volume stats on free and slave populations, regardless of either race, which doesn’t consider the vast numbers plantations accounted for. So no those percentages are false. South Carolina and Mississippi, for example, had higher slave populations than free men but it’s absurd to assume that 100+% of white men owned slaves in those states.

You’d probably have to do it at the county level with census/tax records for population schedules and slave owner lists (possibly tax lists on slave owners) to derive some type of average percent across counties or states.

I just don’t believe those stats. Slaves were expensive and there is no way any significant percentage of white People owned slaves. If it’s more than 1-2% I’d be shocked. What percentage of people today own airplanes? I’d bet the % would be about in that range.

States with the highest percentages were South Carolina and Mississippi. Each was about half of the white population.
