Perhaps your take is the often-pushed narrative going back to the deranged Left of the 1960s, in that the whole concept of the Vietnam War was wrong and/or illegal. This is such a bad take on it. The Soviet Union no longer exists, in part, due to the push-back that 'spread of Communism' received in Korea, Vietnam and elsewhere. The modern Western world is a direct beneficiary of a "peace dividend" that was earned, partly on the loss of 58,000 American soldiers in Vietnam. Their deaths were NOT in vain, no matter what the left-wing narrative is.

If, by Vietnam BS, you mean some poor tactical decision-making, undue political influence, and the anti-war students and media of the time.. then we may be on the same page.
