It's a philosophical connection. The left believes in 'moral relativism'. There is no 'right or wrong.' So, people in prison like that idea and vote left.

Why should former felons who have paid their debt to society not have their rights restored?
Also, we have waaaaaaaaaaaY too many victimless crimes that are considered felonies.

The thing about full voting rights is that there is no guarantee that anyone will vote for anyone in particular. Full voting franchise for American citizens is a good thing. It doesn't guarantee any outcome except that people have the right to participate in the system.
