My daughter is a paralegal for an attorney thats gets appointed federal defense cases. They get a set rate based on the type of case, it is less than her normal billable of $550 per hour. If a case is settled and doesnt go to court she still gets the appointed fee. I am not sure exactly how a capital murder case would work as per the rate but assume it is pretty good and the notoriety would be good as long as she doesn't do something stupid.
