My "modern lens" didn't write the Bible.

quote:

but it certainly was for the majority of the original Christians.

It was not.

quote:

The "seed" of the church.

Which quotes from the Bible are you ignoring to use this quote as your basis for your argument?

Again, i ask, ARE YOU CHRISTIAN? I take it you are not, therefore, you don't really understand the purpose of Christianity. The purpose was not martyrdom, though martyrdom did happen.

In most instances he referred to himself as a doulos to God.

Did Jesus ever say this about himself? I believe that Paul mentions something to this effect, but where did Jesus do so?

quote:

When we see the reference in most of the usage of the word doulos, it is clear that yes, it does mean slave, but not to the extent that the modern word slave means.

Oh good lord. I gave you kudos for admitting that the word meant slave earlier, now you’re backtracking.

Do you know much about the quote you are repeating?

quote:

Tertullian’s point was that Roman persecution, instead of wiping Christians out, drew more people to the faith because of the martyrs’ courage.

You're ignoring a contemporary of early Christianity and what drove the early Christians, why?

He is describing early Christians and the role of martyrdom in the religion.

I covered that already

quote:

I didn't make the Resurrection the hallmark of the religion, my dude, focusing on suffering of the lower class and teaching martyrdom as a high principle, which was the focus of early Christianity

Are you even reading my posts? I literally said this when originally citing the quote:

quote:

Christianity spread from an apocalyptic sect/cult to a movement based on suffering of the lower/slave class and the principle of martyrdom, in the face of Roman society. Have you never heard of the quote "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church" from Tertullian?

Why did you think regurgitating what I already argued was somehow a counter to my point?

How am I ignoring when i literally gave you information from Tertullian's Apologeticus? Seems you are ignoring the contemporary writings in the Bible, and the entire point of Christianity, why?

quote:

He is describing early Christians and the role of martyrdom in the religion.

You need to brush up a little more on your theologian studies.

quote:

ertullian addresses Roman provincial governors (especially the magistrates of Carthage). Christians were being treated as criminals simply for the name “Christian.” He argues they should have the same legal standing as other groups in the empire. His main points:

Persecution of Christians is unjust and legally irregular.
Common slanders (atheism, incest, cannibalism, disloyalty to Rome) are rumors without evidence.
Christians are morally stricter than their accusers and are useful, law-abiding citizens.
Pagan gods are not real; the true God is the one Christians worship.
Killing Christians does not stamp the movement out—it spreads it. That is the setting of the line “the blood of Christians is seed.”

It's always entertaining when non-Christians explain what Christianity was about, whilst completely ignoring the Bible.

Because you clearly do not understand Christianity at all. You have stated several times using Tertullian as your backup, that the "main point" of Christianity was martyrdom. It was not, nor is it the main point of Christianity.

Tertullian's point was to argue to the Romans, that killing Christians did not strengthen the Romans. All it did was strengthen the resolve and spread the word about Christianity. The word was not martyrdom. One can reasonably argue that Tertullian's point was an effort to stop the Romans from murdering Christians.

If you ever bothered to read the Bible, you would know that. But you are ignoring the most famous book in the history of the world, and the teachings inside simply because you yourself, are not a Christian.

Sura 47:4-9 promises paradise to whoever cuts off the head of an infidel.

How can it not be illegal to have and belong to an organization that chants death to America and preaches the quran on our soil.

They need to be deemed a terrorist organization and exiled now before it`s too late.

First of all, I realized you are responding to a point I didn't make, and this seals the proverbial deal.

This is what I said:

quote:

The entire point of Jesus was that he was going to say things that would lead to him "not being around long"

Note: I did not reference Christianity itself.

quote:

You have stated several times using Tertullian as your backup, that the "main point" of Christianity was martyrdom. I

And here is proof of your conflation. I hope I clarified it above.

I never said the point of "Christianity" was martyrdom. It was the main point of Jesus.

quote:

Tertullian's point was to argue to the Romans, that killing Christians did not strengthen the Romans. All it did was strengthen the resolve and spread the word about Christianity.

Again, I covered this already

quote:

I didn't make the Resurrection the hallmark of the religion, my dude, focusing on suffering of the lower class and teaching martyrdom as a high principle, which was the focus of early Christianity

quote:

You are arguing my point.

quote:

One can reasonably argue that Tertullian's point was an effort to stop the Romans from murdering Christians.

You're conflating arguments here. It matters not what his purported overall thesis was. What matters is his description of early Christianity, a religion based around the concept of martyrdom in the face of Rome. That's why, again, it was so popular with the lower classes of Roman society, and why they celebrated martyrs, who mimicked the suffering of Jesus in defending the faith.

quote:

If you ever bothered to read the Bible, you would know that.

The bible supports my point, too.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son

Again

quote:

The entire point of Jesus was that he was going to say things that would lead to him "not being around long"

The story of Christianity begins with God sending Jesus to preach the new gospel, with the full understanding that it will be so controversial that he will die for it, which then leads to the most holy act of the Bible (the Resurrection). Hence why Easter is the holiest day of the Christian calendar.

Emotionally or not, we’ve got plenty scenarios to consider it in America.
