I know John Paul Stevens retired a few years ago but look at this editorial he wrote in the Washington Compost today. I guarantee the 4 libs on the bench share the same views, they were all dissenters in recent gun cases like Heller and McDonald after all. One conservative justice gone and gun rights are gone too.

quote:

Justice Stevens: The five extra words that can fix the Second Amendment

That anomalous result can be avoided by adding five words to the text of the Second Amendment to make it unambiguously conform to the original intent of its draftsmen. As so amended, it would read:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms when serving in the Militia shall not be infringed.”

you are correct sir. I pray everyday that one of the "conservative" justices doesn't die or retire until after Obama's term is over.

Can I declare myself a militia? You know, a militia of one.

Couldn't the governor of a state just say "everybody who lives in this state is now a "militia" member.

I always took it to mean:

A well regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free state. Because of this, the people have the right to have guns so that they can form their own militia.

This.

For years the left has said that the state militia is the national guard and that ordinary citizens can't own guns. Now they are trying to twist it again, which in this case, scary as it is, is a more effective argument. In reality it's all about one thing. They want a more pliable society for which they can maintain absolute control.

Rights are over-rated.
Especially when The State is being tread upon by mere citizens.

The federal government will never try and take away our guns. They will almost certainly try and prevent any more guns from being bought at some point but existing guns will be grandfathered in.

There are simply too many guns in circulation to practically come and take them. Local and federal law enforcement personnel would die, old men in Texas would be getting shot on their porches on national TV, etc. It just wont happen because it isnt feasible and might very well lead to open rebellion in many areas.

i think he is right that the 2nd amendment is extremely poorly worded, however i don't think he cares about the framers intent, not understands it.

Yeah, right. Our government militia can't even have weapons on their person while on base.

Ftfy

Montana
North and South Dakota
Virginia
West Virginia
Central Pennsylvania
Texas
Idaho
Wyoming
Oklahoma
Kentucky
Tennessee
Alaska
Alabama
Louisiana
South and North Carolina
North Florida
Georgia
Mississippi
Arkansas
Missouri
Kansas
Iowa
Colorado minus Denver
Arizona
Southern Ohio
California(gangs)

All of these areas would revolt. I don't think the military would turn on citizens either.

This has been my number one criteria for three decades now - supreme court nominees.

I have seen our rights erode, our culture deteriorate, and raw politics invade the deliberative process on the Supreme Court.

This is why I reflexively vote GOP for any POTUS - there is no DEM candidate who can be trusted to do anything but attempt more constitutional diversion via judicial processes.

The feds won't try to make them illegal right away because it would lead to a second coming of the Confederate States of America plus several others. The libs in fed gov and the blue states will do what happened to smokers. First you can't have "assault rifles" then it will be handguns then it will be anything that hold more than one round at a time, etc.

Let me rephrase that.

I don't think they entire military would turn on citizens. I'm sure a decent percentage would turn with them.

I have good friends who I know would follow orders in a heartbeat to turn their guns on American citizens, and it breaks my heart.

Well, here are some things I'm thankful for:

A: I'm really thankful to know that our forefathers' minds can now be read and that they had no command of the English language.

B. I'm really thankful to know how stupid our forefathers were in totally missing this little nuance. Wow! I can't believe our country has survived in spite of their obvious failings in correctly communicating their intent.

C. I'm grateful that the Supremes can't rewrite the Constitution.
