McCarhy was his own worst enemy. He turned people off with his actions and rhetoric when all that was needed were facts and proof. The KGB files proved he was correct. He, in a way, was the communists' best weapon for a slow takeover.

The gaslighting against McCarthy was epic and sustained. Hollywood has depicted him as a paranoid kook, in reality the threat existed.
Records released from KGB files after the fall of the USSR vindicated him. There were Russian spys at all levels of America, even in the White House. FDR's best friend and confidant, Harry Hopkins, who lived in the White House with him, was almost certainly a Russian spy. At the very least, Hopkins was a communist sympathizer, he passed classified US information directly to Stalin.
