For quoting Ronald Reagan?

ETA
“You can go to live in France, but you cannot become a Frenchman… You can go to live in Germany or Turkey or Japan, but you cannot become a German, a Turk, or a Japanese. But anyone, from any corner of the Earth, can come to live in America and become an American.”

Reagan gave millions of illegal immigrants a free pass to this country. We are today paying for the overly idealistic and rose colored vision that Reagan had. Those people didn’t magically become American, but America is becoming more and more like them.

I remember when Reagan was thought of fondly.

Reagan did a lot of great things and some not so great things. He totally gave away the game on immigration though.

Amnesty and his 1986 Tax Reform were dumb.

I get it. Conservatives want a win so badly but the last 50 years we have stair stepped our way left. Everything has shifted left so bad and now look at us.

please explain in detail how lowering the top marginal rate from 50% to 28% was a mistake?

this should be good! especially in light of the fact that 63% of merican's n' such pay no income taxes and the top 10% of returns pay 70% of all collected income taxes.

Lowering individual rates was great, but the changes regarding commercial/investment real estate precipitated the S & L crisis by crushing that market (thus, gutting the collateral value of those properties).

You need to go some years ahead to 1995.

i was 25 and a stock broker in 1986, the s and l crisis didn't happen until 1989 no doubt it killed the tax shelter business because they were no longer needed. it also increased the tax equivalent yield on bonds by 40% which was the primary cause of the correction in 1987.

i guess if high marginal tax rate where responsible for thousands of multifamily housing units being built that would never be occupied and that was a good thing. i was was simply alive during that time i guess i hadn't realized that narrative had been rewritten. thanks for bringing that to my attention.

It's also a different time with different circumstances. America was a more demanding place in terms of assimilation, the people coming were different, the people receiving them were different.

And, we need to normalize saying that even if America was "a country of immigrants" - it doesn't always have to be. We're not the plucky upstart anymore. Someone else can do that.
