So if I slap a judge in the face in open court, it’s just a misdemeanor?

Can't speak for Virginia, but in Louisiana, you'll likely get 6 months contempt immediately and then be charged with a crime that will carry the potential of another 6 months on top of that.

I'm not sure where people picked up the idea that "misdemeanor" means "pay your slap on the wrist fine and go on your way", but it's not accurate. And I don't know about you, but spending three months locked in a cage would frick up my life pretty substantially.

And the possibility that the judge pulls his piece out and shoots you right there in his own courtroom.

I can't carry a concealed weapon in a courtroom, but a judge sure as hell can.

Assault against a child or elderly person carries a heftier penalty, Bc they are helpless.

Which makes sense

Domestic violence carries a heftier penalty than hitting a random dude.
first responders and LEO are not helpless but they are much more likely to be assaulted bc of their jobs.

These don’t make sense from a principle standpoint.

Is assault a misdemeanor if it results in no injury against a civilian

No, but I don't think they cared about it being a felony either

Honestly, I don't have a problem with this. They shouldn't get special treatment because they have a uniform.

Are you serious or just trolling? This may start off 'bad' for cops but will lead to more pieces of shite being shot and killed.

Are y’all serious with this logic?

You think people putting their hands on a cop give two shits about the law? You think they’ll be a rash of new police assaults because of this? That’s simply illogical.

Do you think these shitheads know or care about the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony?

Or do you think misdemeanor means cite and release?

From what I understand in Virginia, yes. They just changed the law so you get the same penalty for hitting a civilian as a police officer.

If that same action is a misdemeanor against Joe Public there's absolutely no reason it should be a felony against a cop

Just remember this when a cop hopefully unloads their clip into someone who decided it was ok to punch a cop. Yes I do think attacks on cops will go up.... hopefully the cops just shoot and kill the shitheads.

So be it. I just don’t see how this makes it open season on cops like y’all are insinuating.

Close your eyes and KNOW the day is coming when Democrats pass bills saying attacking those that disagree with them is OK too.

Now open them and watch what Dem leaders and judges are doing to those committing violence in their cities.

Yep. Welcome to the new reality.

But remember, if you think this is wrong, you are a Nazi, and you better salute them when they demand it.

which would allow an assault against a law enforcement officer to a misdemeanor if the person attacked is not hurt.

This doesn't sound all that bad honestly and wouldn't be as newsworthy outside of the shite going on now. Seems like it's there to stop the "oh you touched me, that's a felony!" type of charges.

Really depends on the fleshed out definition of "hurt".
