All my retirement money is at Vanguard. I’m a 1%er. Wonder if I can get one of those Hells Angels patches?

I came here to post this. The investors own vanguard, not some family. It is a beautiful way to set up a simple index fund based company.

And if the majority of shares are owned by a handful of rich families, would you not say that the company is essentially owned by those families? Who do you think gets to control where the money is invested?

Vanguard is massive because it has the king of all S&P 500 Index Funds (I've had money there for decades). Why? It has insanely low fees because it basically just buys the S&P 500 in a balanced way and performs just as the S&P 500 does. Sure that technically makes them huge owners but the whole point is it is basically an autopilot fund because anyone that knows anything about investing knows that historically the S&P500 beats the market 80-85% of the time and just investing your money in a low-cost index of those companies is a very safe way to make money.

The ones to worry about are the big Hedge Funds and PE firms that throw around big bucks at companies or industries to the point they can manipulate markets.

Oh, I love the Rothschilds "Jews control the world" bit mixed in.

Have you missed that Blackrock is buying up entire neighborhoods of single family homes at 20% to 40% above market price? They are sucking up scarce housing supply & creating a permanent renter class. They're not a hedge fund, though, so I guess there's that. Personally I'm for individual human beings to have legally protected first options to buy housing.

Y’all do realize that Blackrock uses your money to promote their ideology. You invest in an index fund. They use the money to buy shares in companies. With those shares they get votes to influence boards and board policies.

It’s why Exxon-Mobile added 2 environmentalist nuts to their board a few weeks ago.

Finance.yahoo.com is a pretty good resource on largest shareholders for individual companies. It’s hard to find a “significant” company that is not at least 5% owned by blackrock and their funds.

Now do a Google search on blackrock ties to the Biden administration.

This is the point that most miss. And there's no doubt that Blackrock (not sure about Vanguard) is very, very politically motivated/bent.

Keep buying their shitty index funds... I’d rather own 10-20 individual stocks then let them make any money on me.

The problem is they don't get to control the companies as a major/minority stock holder would. They own a piece of the fund, that mimics whatever index it is.

When you invest in indexes, as Vanguard got their start and are a major players, you invest in the S&P 500, or CRSP Small Cap Index, or whatever they offer. That means you put money in the fund and it is cap-weighted to the index. You don't get to vote in stockholder meetings for some company.

But somebody else does, and that's the issue.
